Just switched from years of Clie NX80V / UX50 usage and wanted some info. Sorry to not have searched, but I wanted the newest info out. Thanks for understanding.

Question is: If you just bought a new N800, what programs would you place into it? I particularly need up-to-date info on ability to read Excel and Word format pages, also I need a very good appointment calendar program.

What is the best out there for the N800 with upgraded 2008 software...games...office programs...stock...you know, all the good stuff. I am getting it in the mail later this week, any info would be helpful.

Again, I will search in the future, just needed the latest and greatest.

Thanks,

Dunno about Excel or Word, but I remember something about using Abiword or something like that to convert .doc files into a format the n800 could read. As for a calendar, try GPE Calendar, it can sync with Google if you use ermming.

For stocks you could try finding an applet (I don't check my stocks often so i don't bother with them) as for games there is a game section in this forum. You can also try going to maemo.org and going to the games section to install their games. I personally like sudoku (yeah, sounds fun I know :P) and bomberman. There's a GBA emulator but it's rather slow. Battle of Wesmoth? is a fun turn based strategy RPG game. I can't remember the exact name is also fun, I have it on my Ubuntu Linux installs but not on my tablet since it's running OS2008 and not OS2007 (which the version that you can find on here requires).

greetings from the gulf coast!

for simply reading word docs, you must install:

antiword (from the abiword repository)
docreader

to read excel files, install gnumeric

IIRC, these apps work under os2008

for calendering, gpe-calender - however, dunno about os2008 compatibility (i use os2007 and will wait out upgrading to os2008 for a rev or two)

btw, i have an n800 w/os2007 and i am *very* happy with my selection of ancillary clients:

applets:
omweather
osso-statusbar-cpu

extras:
xterm-osso
gpe-calendar
camera
fmradio
maemo recorder
maemo screengrabber
maemoTk
MPlayer
unzip
maemochron

games:
aisleriot
eightyone

office:
evince
doc reader
gnumeric
leafpad
Sdictviewer

tools:
diskusage
wifiInfo
htop

(and sundry command-line utilities, such as OpenSSH, the nano editor, etc.)

have a happy!

I can tell you now, that if you're looking to use the n800 as a PIM, you've probably picked the wrong device.

Not saying that it can't work in that capacity, but it's really not what it's designed to do, unless you're wanting to just use Google apps.

I carry a treo 755p with mine, and let the treo handle all the heavy lifting in terms of e-mail, contacts, calendaring and "work" stuff.

The n800 isn't even remotely in the same ballpark as the palm when it comes to PIM stuff.

I mostly agree, except that I do all my e-mailing on the NIT - we're pretty well covered there, with the exception of the occasional bump in the road. I never feel the need for using my T3 for that anymore, even though versamail worked fine enough for me.
For contacts and calendar there's no competition for my T3 though. At least not yet.

The lack of exchange activesync kills me when it comes to e-mail on my n800.

I'd prefer to have the bigger screen of the n800 and the n800 would be a far better device for email if enterprise integration wasn't a concern.I still sometimes use the exchange webmail client, but it's not the same as having calendar, contacts and e-mail native to the application's format.

If I had to chose one device over the other (755p vs. n800) it's the 755p. I can do about 93% of the things on my 755p that I can do on the tablet, albeit on a much smaller screen. I can do about 30% of the things that the 755p does on the n800 alone.

I guess back to my point, while there are some PIM-type apps for the n800, and some of those are quite tolerable for basic things, coming from a platform that has been built around PIM from the start, the n800 really isn't remotely acceptable in that role just yet, nor is it being marketed as such.

Thanks to all of you for your time spent with me here. Perhaps I should just go back to the ClieNX80V, which has what I need, but is becoming antiquated with OS 5.0

It really looked like emailing was almost perfect on this N800 unit. I seem to read otherwise.

Again...Thanks one and all...I'll keep checking in to read any other comments. The "800" is being delivered tomorrow

Just wanted to clarify, as a long-time Windows HPC/PPC user and now a N800, too. I'd say email is better in N800 IF you are using personal IMAP/POP compatible accounts such as gmail (though you'll need Modest or Clawsmail for that instead of the built-in email client). But IF you're using a corporate account with activesync then I'd stick with PPC or Palm (at least I can't get support for N800 in our business).

I choose the N800 for use as an UMP. It is very good for calendaring, email, office work, games, and music. It is also nice that you don't have to buy applications, or pay for ongoing services. You do have to learn how to install apps and troubleshoot the device yourself.

The auto installs from the webs along with the application manager allow you to custom configure it to get exactly, well pretty much, what you want out of it. Even if you only have very limited linux experience. It doesn't take long to catch on to the sequence of events for doing installs.

You also might find that it is best to stay away from the bleeding edge of software development if you want to use it as a reliable tool in the office.

OS2007 has the essential office environment apps. gnumeric doesn't work in OS2008 yet. If you use complex spreadsheets then you'll have to lag back and monitor the forums until those who rush in get that all sorted out. There are still cell formating issue.

GPE calendar has to be turned on in order for its appoinment alarms to work. It won't wake the device and launch itself. So if you have a 7am alarm you need to leave the N800 on overnight with GPE calendar running.

That means you also need to leave it on the charger. I prefer it greatly to my old LifeDrive, and it is much more portable than my PSP.
