i recently got a cheap 1gb card - so its cheap and that was my biggest mistake.

i transfered a load of files from Xp to 770 and some of them came out corrupt. so i tried to delete them but some of them wudnt budge. i tried to delete them using 770 file manager and USB linked to Xp - it sed that the file had been deleted - in particular, the file THE RING - but then the file appeared again as having 0kB - it was very hard to finally remove - but it just keep reappearing - like the film has possessed my card

its finally gone - but any advice on how to avoid this happening again?

It sounds as though the partition might be corrupt. FAT partitions are, well, pretty bollocks comared to modern ones - a lot less robust. However they're easily read cross-platform, hence why its used. Did you accidentally unplug it without ejecting it?

If you don't, there may be part of the file left in the computer's cache that hasn't been written (it does it to make it look faster). XP *does* have a quick eject mode for removable media (i.e. it doesn't cache it), but I'm not sure if that's enabled by default.

When it's plugged into your computer, right click on it & reformat as a fat16 (or just fat) partition.

Hopefully that should reset things to 0.

Old DOS tricks:

Copy another file with the same name overtop (Do you want to overwrite, yes)... then try deleting.

Try actually formatting the memory card.

There was an app that would defragment the memory card in the apps section of www.maemo.org. Mayhaps it'll shuffle stuff around.

Sounds like you've got the memory equivalent of a bad sector.

I too have a cheapo 1 gig card. I also have some problems that may or may not be related to it.

When I go control panel > memory, the memory window opens blank ond often will not close. Also, whenever I open a help topic, a blank help window opens which I cannot close. These events occur whether I have the 1 gig card inserted or not. I have also had some problems with lockups when downloading; usually to the 1 gig card.

Any ideas or suggestions?

thanks in advance...

Check your firmware, and update? If the problems are there when the card isn't, it's most likely not related to the card (unless of course it wasn't clean when you first started using it).
