I need some assistance. I was following the directions using the Unbuntu for flasher to get the Nokia into R&D mode, but when I get to the part to connect the Nokia, the Windows OS prompts for nokia 770 (host) drivers to be installed. I figured that the rs-mmc was the problem, and it corrected the Windows OS from not connecting to the device. Without the rs-mmc in the 770, it says VMware USB device connected. However, I still get the USB device not suitable, waiting message in the VMware window. It never goes through the rd mode activation, the VMware sees the device and can migrate through it, but I don't get the r&d mode enabled.

I am using the chmod 0550 flasher command, and I have tried chmod +777 flasher as well.

Any ideas as to what to do? What am I missing?

Could it be that my USB is not that good for the VMware, or am I forgetting a device lock of some sort?

I do not connect using VMware, but I do use desktop Ubuntu. Have the Nokia turned OFF when connecting to the computer. Run the flasher script as root. When the flasher says "Suitable USB device not found, waiting" turn on the Nokia by holding the "Home" key while pressing the "On/Off" button.

thanks troubleshootr, but how do I access the Ubuntu without the VMware. I am using Windows XP without any real Linux software. Can I just run Ubuntu without the VMware? Or is there another software for desktop Ubuntu?

That worked for me when I enabled R&D mode. At the top of VMPlayer you should see a bunch of buttons representing resources like the CDROM, etc. The USB device should appear and I believe you have to click on it to allow Ubuntu to see it. At that point it should go from waiting to performing whatever commands you asked the flasher to.

I tried to click on it, but you have to exit the VMware to click that button, correct? I will try it again, to see if that works.

Thanks.

Another option would to be download the flasher to your hard drive. Run a live cd, tell it to read from your hard drive, and install the flasher that way.

If you have enough memory, you could juse Knoppix and dl the flasher to your desktop, since it's all stored in ram-disk.

The live cd is the maemo disc, correct? And I can just boot off it, and user the linux flasher that I already dl with ubuntu. Am I working in Ubuntu to run the flasher, or is live CD a different enviroment?

When I was using the VMware, and the Ubuntu, it saw the device. Just when the flasher command was executed, it said it was not suitable. The device itself could be searched through the desktop viewer. Is that what you were seeing, Hedgecore. And then you jumped out to click on the nokia usb phone device button, and then the flasher worked.

I will try the live CD, but I am unclear of how it works, or what the flow of the commands are when reading maemo.org.

Again, how can work around the VMware with Ubuntu? Can I just Ubuntu on its own, or am I to use the live CD to operate that interface.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it.

A live cd is a different environment. It allows you to run Ubuntu on it's own without having to install it on your computer. You have to acquire (download and burn) a Live CD image (instead of the install image). There is an Ubuntu Live Cd, as well as several others.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html

Basically you boot from the live cd, and it runs the whole OS from the cd in your Ram. In my opinion for most things, its better than using VMWare. With a live CD you'll be able to use the linux based flasher you Downloaded to your hard drive.

Thanks Rattis, I will give it a try tonight. I just need to follow the terminal commands from before with finding the flasher on my drive. Do I have to designate where the flasher is, since with the VMware, I would DL the flasher through firefox to the desktop, so it knew where to run the flasher, without me telling it where it was. I just don't want to get hung up, after running the disc, and wonder how find the file.

Thanks again.
