In order to be vaporware, something should be delayed from the announced schedule, and even probably several times. Nothing like that happened to Jolla. Yet at least.

Yeah, I think it's more like Flakeware. There are a lot of bad signs in my opinion:

First and foremost, their asinine reliance on Twitter as their public face. That was (barely) acceptable for the first few months after they announced their existence, since they had the story that they announced their existence before they really wanted to, in order to show the world that Meego was not dead. But now they have an official homepage which is covered with random Twitter postings. Gee - why not include some baby pictures too, and maybe some cute cat videos?

Secondly, their Slush video presentations were very amateurish. I'm not talking just about the one that showed the back of a guy's head most of the time. They were all technically bad (text difficult to read), and obviously inadequately rehearsed. The only one that had even a little actual information in it was the SDK presentation, but the first speaker could not get his laptop display projected (of course, it's sad they were making their video by recording a projected image in the first place). This event was supposed to be Jolla's big coming out event, and they didn't even bother running through the talks beforehand, to check that everyone's AV aids would work.

Third, as far as I can tell, they still have not released an SDK. I guess it's possible that they have announced how to download an SDK in their Twitter feed. It's also possible that a dumpster behind their office building has instructions on how to download an SDK written on an old burrito wrapper. Both would be equally useful documentation methods. The jolla.com site has no technical information of any kind. The Sailfish site has the helpful instruction that "Building Qt-Creator is not easy; getting Designer built too can be hard. ". The Sailfish site suggests that one enquire on IRC channels to get help building an SDK. Why can't these guys, after MONTHS of working on it, just make a virtual machine that we can download for a development environment? I've done that myself for other SDKs. It is not hard. It's starting to look like this is yet another distro that has no interest in outside developers.

I still have great hopes for Jolla/Sailfish, but I think things are starting to look fishy, and not in a good way.

Lol, flakeware?

I think it's more like Starwares.

Intressting post and I'm with you but I must ask:
How many wares do we have for bad things?

I don't think anything looks fishy. Mistakes on the presentation were annoying (camera not showing the screen image and etc.), but I liked the informal nature of it, which was good in contrast with many formal corporate presentations.

Reliance on Twitter only was criticized many times, and they expanded their communication channels since then.

But if the whole SDK/dev/alliance story isn't ready to be fully presented yet, why should it be more substantive than it currently is?
Besides, I was of the impression that it's more the user-facing site, whereas sailfishos.org is geared more for the devs.
I do agree though, I'm not a fan of the microblogging/social_media centric approach, many devs in their tiny team are engaging in "group hugs" with followers almost as much as work.

This was entirely the venue, it was a joke, I watched many other start-ups, not only Jolla, same sad amateurism.
It's the nature of that format/show, everything is done very ad-hoc, so it all comes out looking very unslick (no pun intended).
Some videos came out much later with better angles, so one could actually read/see most of the stuff on the big display, will dig em up for you if you want.

Yeah starting to wonder there, but really it's unfair to get too hypercritical there, yet...

Sailfish site is clearly meant to be the dev-centric site, that's where most useful info. will appear, gradually...

Did you watch the entire SDK presentation, this WAS covered....

If you use Linux as a host, you won't even need a virtual machine. It'll be useful only for non Linux host OSes. On Linux chroot approach will work, saving performance and extra overhead of VMs. Inside the VM it'll run qemu anyway to emulate ARM, so you don't need that extra layer of VirtualBox really.

For those tired waiting, there are other good news. Hopefully Mer/PlasmaActive images for Nexus 7 are coming soon.

Perhaps we were all watching different things, but all I saw was one incomplete UI design with so much to be desired. There is nothing, I mean nothing revolutionary. For a start up, you have to have a revolutionary idea to make it. N9 was iPhone wanna be and failed in so many places. Jolla is wearing emperor clothes, and this forum is eating it up.

Yeah, but why would anyone take you (of all people) as some kind of objective authority, most people have you on block because you have blinkers on.
No-one needs your mindless ranting, people are smart enough to form their own opinions without your warped agenda.
