Is this problem unique to the 810?

I don't know. I would investigate T-mobile's "FlexPay" program to see if they allow data plans. That might be what you are looking for...

The AT&T $19.99 MediaMax plan is also reputed to work, though tethering technically will violate your TOS. Also, with AT&T, if your cell phone is 3G capable and you have 3G network coverage in your area, that is something to consider as well.

I don't know much about the other carriers, as others have and will tell you, Howard Forums is a good place to start for gathering information.
What plan is it that T-Mobile has that is $19.99 or $5.99?
Can you provide a link?
When I go to T-mobile I only see a Total internet plan for $39.99.

Hi everyone,

First post in[I] any[I] forum. But I thought I might have something to contribute here...

I have a motorola i580 on Nextel and just bought an N810
I was frustrated at first, but managed to get it to work.

Some details:
I have an unlimited data plan ($15.00, but I hear you can get it for $10.00 now)
The phone has wap web access.
The phone requires that you dial s=2 to establish a packet data link.
The phone number field in the N810 won't allow an alpha character, so this won't work.
It also requires at least some kind of entry in this space to continue.
It will allow a space character.
When it sends that to the phone (AT 'space') the phone will simply reply with "ok"
No user name or password is required. Just left blank.

Now, under the advanced options, there is a tab labled "other"
There is a field labled "Supplementary AT commands"
Put "atdt s=2" there.

Now it all seems to work just fine.
Slow, but it works.
I get about 21kbps.

Browsing works (slowly)
e-mail to/from my pop server provider works.

Seeing my position on an auto downloaded satalite map while driving down the highway running Maemo Mapper is really cool!

Enjoy
Ralf

No it wont. I have Tmobile prepaid - it is very cheap - but no data.
You could ask Tmobile - they will tell you - no data on prepaid phones.

I got my Motorola i605 and N800 to recognize each other and the N800 even says that I am connected, but the icon keeps flashing from solid green to red slash. How can I fix this?

I haven't had my N800 for very long, but I believe that is the icon for the chat program.

SERO specifically prohibits PAM ( phone as modem ) and you can't even add it as an option. You may be able to get away with it on a small number of phones. See howardforums wiki on the subject.

For someone who has access to wifi most of the time and need internet access on rare occasions where wifi is unavilable, the cheapest solution would be Boostmobile. For around $7 per month ($3.5 if "$10 for 3 months" reboost can be found) you get some minutes (which I don't use) and free internet access through iDEN network. You get dial-up speed, not broadband, but I used it exclusively (no wifi connection) on a 2 week vacation recently and managed to get connected, patiently

I found the $10 reboost cards at my neighborhood 7-Eleven.
