Nokia are a business and have chosen a path of using the OSS community phenomenon to reduce their overheads specifically after sales support and development. Unlike Apple who do the opposite and make a killing from their Applications store.

Please DO NOT post in different threads about the same topic.

As linked above the wiki page provides all the information you require.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Reflash

If you cannot use the flasher utility, in settings there is an option in the top menu to remove personal data.

What exactly do you mean when you say "format"? The messages above tell you how to reflash (which should erase all data in the phone), and Sixwheeledbeast has described how to erase all personal data if you don't want to reflash. This should presumably be what you want...
