I'm trying to access a shared XP folder on my N800 OS 2008, and failing dismally. When I open the File Manager I don't see anything on the left saying "Shared Media" or similar - just the N800 and the two SD cards.

The folder is being shared using Properties > Sharing > Network sharing and security, and doesn't have a password. I can access it fine from another computer on the network.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

do you have a firewall on the windows box?

Early on I learned that file sharing on the Nokia is flaky at best. I could see them sometimes, sometimes not.

I have the default XP firewall (plus another in my wifi router, which shouldn't affect connections inside the network). I've disabled it but still don't see anything :-(

Does the "Shared Media" directory only appear if the n800 finds some shared directories, or should there always be an entry?

I've found that if you don't see the $Shares in File Manager, close and reopen File Manager and they most-of-the-time appear.

They really need a REFRESH command in File Manager to rescan directories and drives.

I don't know if this is always the case, but I have only been able to successfully see and use shares on XP machines that are using Simple File Sharing.

Yup. Most of the time I see my shared network folders no problem, but sometimes they just unaccountably fail to appear. I just reboot the N800 and they usually appear.

To be fair, I have the same problem with various Windows systems. It's Windows networking that's flakey, not necessarily the N800 (although I've seen some other bugs in OS2008's File Manager that don't give me a lot of confidence).

Trouble is I *never* see any Shares in the File Manager. And I am using Simple Sharing.

Do I have to tell the N800 the "Workgroup" name in some way?

I didn't. Although I can only get it to see the shares on our network at work. On my home network (which is using the same model router!) I haven't gotten it to see the shares so far. Win XP Pro on both networks with Simple Sharing.
