Thanks for the loop mode of morse code (poetical, I know) idea and implementation! Controlling red led is another awesome idea, that I'm shocked no one tried before. Holding my thumbs (and NEONs) for it!

About the brightness i disagree - the regular level looks fine to me.

Copernicus - thanks for the "continuous pulse" button. making the flashes for this mode configurable like in the "Strobe Flash" will be cool

Ah, no, I hadn't... Ok, checked their code, and yeah, they're using exactly the same "dsmetool -k" and "dsmetool -t" to kill and restart the camera-ui app. But at least they aren't trying to mess around with the camera-ui's gconf settings.

What current are you running torch mode at?
Sorry, yeah, the "torch" mode is running the flash LEDs at 50 mA, from what I've read on the ADP1653 data sheet. From the V4L2 parameters I'm getting, that seems to be the one and only allowed current level for torch use...

Actually, you can already vary the duration of the flashes by using the dot-duration control in the Morse code window. (In fact, you can enter your own string of Morse code and have it run continuously as well.) But yeah, I could include a UI for more precise control if you want.

This is priceless, actually made me laugh out loud.

How about the program looking for a "power user flag" like a hidden file with a text string that would require users to explicitly do this if they want to get into trouble? Just look for the existence of the flag, and if present enable this potentially catastrophic feature.

Honestly, I'm really not comfortable writing software that will physically damage N900s, no matter how much their owners want it. There just aren't enough N900s left in the world!

(But, as I've said, the source code is available; you can modify it yourself if you absolutely need that feature...)

Thanks! With Lanterne and Pierogi, I think I've just about mastered the art of switching LEDs on and off now.

I fully understand. And you are right, your source code is there to be modified.

Regarding the N900s, I think most obsessed and hardcore N900 users have multiple units. I am on my 1st one still (using another one for experimentation), and I am not going to tell you how many I have because I feel ashamed of it.

LOL. Well, thats a rather humble way of putting it. Like saying that Shakespeare mastered the art of scribbling words on paper.

Well, I didn't really do too much work on Lanterne today, but I went ahead and pushed up a little update anyway. The only new functionality in version 0.5.1 is an option on the preferences window that will cause Lanterne to exit when you close the camera cover.

I've also started to play around with the UI a bit, to reconfigure Lanterne more as a general-purpose flashlight app than as a tool for experimentation. To simplify the main window, I've moved the "strobe flash" button off of it and into the menu options. I've also tweaked the UI in a couple of other places, in an attempt to start cleaning it up. (I should also probably find some pretty icons or something to make it look professional, I guess... )

Now I understand and fully support your concern for potentially breaking the device. Feeding the LED 6x the maximum allowed current sounds scary indeed.

Just a bit of theory. Flasing LEDs can take several times their nominal continuous current for a long time, even permanently, provided that two conditions are met.
1) The maximum pulse current is not exceeded;
2) The duty cycle is set such that the average current over a longer period of time does not exceed the maximum continuous current.

I don't know what the maximum pulse current for our LED is but it usually tends to be 10 to 20 times the maximum continuous current. If the chip allows 320 mA, then I would stick with it. The other bit is the duty cycle. At 1:1 duty cycle, you are right not to allow to stress the LED for too long. Setting it to 1:5 might allow you to breathe a bit more easily.
