Okay, I'm new to the forums, I've looked and looked for persons with the same problem as me and also searched the topics. I've noticed many people have problems with the built-in GPS in the N810, which also occur to me.

So yeah, I took the N810 with me to work yesterday, cause I didn't have the time to check it out at home. Anyways, I decided to try out the GPS, and I waited about 20 minutes, no satellite fixes. I was guessing I had to update the N810 with newer software. So I did that, and tried the GPS again, notice, this was indoors, though our Garmin Nüvi GPS that we use at work take about a minute to get satellite fixes. Anyways, after work I was waiting for the train, so I was waiting outside and thought it might work there. Nope, even though I waited for over 20 minutes (the train was late T_T), there were no satellite fixes.

I got home and started reading on the forums, now I have the newest OS2008 version, that I could get off the maemo site, the leap year patched gpsd package 1.0-25 or something, still I get no fixes, I've even tried to just let it stay for 30 minutes, still nothing.

So my question is, am I doing anything wrong here? Is it because it has been cloudy and rainy both days? Or is the built-in GPS such a piece of crap that it isn't worth using?

Could someone maybe help me out a little bit here?

EDIT: FYI, I live in Slagelse, on the vest coast of Zealand, and work in Albertslund on the east coast of Zealand.

Clouds and rain don't make any difference. GPS is designed to work through them, although solid water will block the signals. If the GPS has been moved a long distance since having a fix, it can take up to 20 minutes or more to download an almanac and complete ephemeris data. After it gets a fix, subsequent fixes should be much quicker. Try leaving it somewhere with a clear view of the sky, preferably outside, for a half hour or so and see if it gets a fix. Do not hold it near the left edge, because the water in your hand or thumb will block the signals. Your body will block the signals if you hold it near enough, although probably only on one side. Give it a clear view of the sky for long enough, and it should find its position eventually.

Apart from that my impression off the N810 is pretty good, I've already installed a shitload of apps and games. Pretty nice device, now I'm only waiting for my 8 GB miniSD card to arrive :P

For older consumer GPS'es the user manual would often say that a worst-case cold start could take up to 50 minutes. This is not common in practice though.

As for your N810.. take care to keep your hand/fingers away from the upper left corner, that's where the GPS antenna is.

I've had similar experiences... Then sometimes it works fine, even when the ephemeris data should be old (so it should be a cold start).

Well I've got it to work several times now, and I've found out that It can take up to about 5 minutes or a little bit more. So I need to be patient. Also it can have problems when you are near a lot of tall buildings. '

Now the only thing I need to find out how works is maemo mappers track thingie, so I can contribute a bit to OpenStreet map.

Despite the vast majority of people being disappointed to being extremely disappointed in GPS performance of the N810...... I have found it to be more than satisfactory. Yes, it does not lock up as fast as dedicated GPS device. If fact it doesn't lock up as fast as my N95.

However, it usually locks up well under 2 minutes with worst case scenario being about 5 minutes when I flew well over 800 miles from it's last known position.

With that said....... the issue I have seen with my N810 is a random occurrence which the map program when loading in really does not communicate with the GPS unit/chip. So you could wait forever and a "lock" condition will never be obtained.

So far the easiest "fix" is to just reboot and load the map program first, and the lock is usually well under 2 min......
