Hi all,

I know it seems silly, but my work has all the security turned on with its WPA2 and disabling internet sharing on the Windows XP so i can't use either Wifi or bluetooth to connect through the Windows PC.

I need a way to connect the N810 to the Windows XP PC and be able to conncet to the internet through the computer's LAN line.

I know it's possible on PocketPC with ActiveSync, but is there anything for N810/OS2008?

Any suggestions welcome.

The USB cable itself might work (I have trouble, but haven't tried dismounting everything, swapping modules, etc).

http://maemo.org/community/wiki/USBnetworkingWinXP

But with a host-mode adapter (so the n810 can do host) A linksys USB100m ethernet adapter works, but you need to create a "direct" connection which I think is documented on the page above.

Beyond that, you might be able to run a proxy on the windows side (I do squid under cygwin under windows) which will forward requests.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the quick response. I don't think the USB Ethernet adapter will work since I do not have Administrator access (or the proper Domain information/certificates) to configure the adapter.

I would like to pursue the USB cable option, but the information on the Wiki seems to be outdated and not meant for OS2008.

Does anyone know of a workaround for OS2008?

Thanks again.

usbnetworking in OS2008 works, but I only got it talking with my linux box at home - WinXP at work resists (did already with OS2007), not sure why. Maybe there is somebody around having used XP successfully for this?

Possibly you not having administrator status on the box may also be an additional show stopper.

Worth mentioning on the iT-side for OS2008:
- insmod usually needs to be done twice (error message at first try!)
- usb0 is already configured, just "ifup usb0" as root
- change /etc/resolv.conf appropriately for DNS lookup
- to use the connection from hildon applications, use dummyiap

Did you ask the IT guys if there is a possibility for wifi guest access, isolated from the internal LAN? Because more often than not, you don't want to access your workplace computer or any other company computer, you just want internet access from the tablet. And even paranoid companies sometimes have such a guest access point.

cheers

Rupert

Yes, my company has Guest Access, and the stupid IT guy says that I cannot get the access becasue of security issues. He says that they don't want to allow access to the network incase someone tries to hack our system. I can tell you now that this guy is full of *****!!!!! I just want to take him outside and kick his head in for making such a stupid comment. As you can see, I have the best IT guy ever, NOT! If something is for Guest Access, don't you think it should be available to all? Duh!

Anyone with bright ideas?

The usb ethernet adapter wouldn't get you into the ethernet port at your workplace? Is that what you need admin access for?

Note you can usually change the MAC address of cards under Linux (ifconfig eth0 hw addr 12:34:56:78:90:ab or something close), which can be trouble, but if you have the MAC address of a computer which can be but is not connected, it should work.

The USB Ethernet adapter is for the tablet, not for your pc, unless they do some MAC filtering (like Tz1 gives information about) you can then plug your tablet in a ethernet plug and access the network...

I don't get the IT dude, if they simply provide a wifi accesspoint that cannot route to the internal network there is no problem....

You could try SLIP/PPP over a USB-RS232 adapter, but I'm not sure (and not optimistic) about getting those without admin access to the Windows machine... which you can obtain, if they haven't locked out booting from removable media, but it's no doubt a serious policy violation. (More serious than hooking up a private network directly connected to the company's network, though I'm sure that's a policy violation, already)

check the AngstromManual section 4 here about usb networking
http://linuxtogo.org/gowiki/AngstromManual
yes, you will probably need admin rights to your PC in order to install the driver, and to set up internet connection sharing so that your IT can access the net via your PC.
