So I put in the ip address of my tablet as the host name and the password I typed in is the root password of my device, however, I keep getting an error that authentication has failed. What am I doing wrong?

Alternatively, run connection manager (in the Settings group) and on the 'Internet connection' menu there's an option 'IP address' which will tell you what you need to know.

Filemanager had shown the windows shares, but now it doesn't do anymore. I'll try another method, but do not know, if it works.
On my N810 I installed openssh and gave a new root-passwd.
On windows I use Totalcommander (formerly WinCommander) and FTP to the IP I set for my N810, using the new password. It does not work.
What am I doing wrong?

I don't know anything about Totalcommander, but if you've just installed openssh on the tablet you need something which supports secure ftp e.g. WinSCP or Putty's psftp. A plain ftp program won't work through ssh.

Last time I checked the OS2008 File Manager automatically detected my Windows style shares on my NSLU2. Try just setting up a shared folder on your Windows PC and see if you can see it from File Manager.
Ain't working on my N800 with OS2008. I can see the network shares of the file server on my laptop, but not on the Nokia. Suggestions?

and other disappointment for me. I can't believe that this device which is based on the "all mighty linux OS" can not connect to a simple windows smb share with username/password. You would think this would mbe the first program someone would have written.

File manager will pull up my upnp shares on my MCE, but it's not useable by any means, and the shares come and go without reason. I need a way to map a drive permanently within os2008

I'm having this problem too, except it was working for two days, then stopped. I was even playing and streaming music from it. I could see my shared directories/files and later my media library. Now I can't see either. Frustrating.

There are several ways to transfer files from/to your PC to N8x0:

1. USB cable: just boot the N8x0 and connect the USB cable. The PC will see the DOS partitions on the SD(s).
2. Move what you want the N8x0 see on your PC into the shared folder.
Note that the PC and th N8x0 have to be on the same (wifi) LAN. After you boot the N8x0; it will see the PC shared folder. If it doesn't see the folder; just simply close the File Mgr and re-open it! I found it very reliable. At first I was frustrated why it kelp vanishing on me too.
3. Orb
4. ....

1. is the fastest way ! I use it to back up the OS image to PC.

I'm having this same problem.. I keep getting access denied on winscp.

and the alternative of supposedly seeing the shared folder from my pc in my IT file manager has never worked.

I have no idea where I'm going wrong with winscp so any help would really be appreciated

EDIT: I realised what I was doing wrong - the username should be Root not the IP address.

I know I shouldn't be saying this here.. but god Linux is confusing...
