Look again, endso. The page starts with OS codenames. What it does not explain though is, where does the name Maemo come from? And how to properly pronounce it? I have always pronounced it as written, i.e. "ma-eh-mo".

From what I recall, the name "Maemo" comes from the name of the server where the code repository of the OSSO project was stored. So Maemo was soon the internal name at Nokia to refer to that new OSSO OS.
IIRC, "Maemo" was the output of a password generator, when giving that server a name.
