That's apparently correct, but a terrible "solution", especially if you don't want your app settings potentially put in the bin.

You really shouldnt update like that
version --dup instead of zypper update is the correct way

I was also able to solve this issue by installing a new version of some affected apps and it worked after a reboot - but you have to be warned that in my case every app (e.g. whats**p) was requiring the google spy services after the update and every app was unusable so I had to re-install an older version (which also solved the issue of the apps beeing greyed out).

Any idea what this "package management middleware" mean?
Some fix related our upgrade path to 2.0?

This just means that there was an issue with PackageKit regarding the separation of package caches for apps and the OS update.

I had to reduce my disk usage to 9gb in order to let btrfs-balance complete successfully to install this update. "Needs 1.5gb" indeed, more like 5gb.

And I regularly keep an eye on my FS use and manually balance (even from back in the days when you needed to be some kind of savant and run the gauntlet rebooting while it was in progress). How the hell is this FS supposed to be stable for "normal" users?! I don't have any music or movies on the device (there's no room, especially if I randomly need a 5gb buffer) and it's still full, plus I charge my phone at work, hardly ever overnight, so the auto-balance won't be happening. Although it won't help running auto-balance repeatedly if it never succeeds. And then the fact it won't succeed blocks me from doing an update. Grrr.
