hmm... perhaps there is some other factor that interferes with the connection. I've been chatting earlier today with some Aussie friends and it worked for me without delays both on WIFI and 3G...

1) QuickFlickr - great UI design, "show photos near me" which is a very cool feature
2) FlickrUp - has terrible splash screen and uglier interface, but has more features and you can actually upload photos,
although I haven't tried it myself . . .

Ok guys, it's not that bad. I bought my N9 back in 2011 and I'm still using it. Below is a short list of working apps that rely on internet connection:
everything works except chat (the one integrated in the phone messaging system, the one in the app itself works fine)
(....)

FlickrUp starts to choke when your photo collection gets too large . . . like hundreds of images large.

It only uploads (for viewing in the app) the last 200 (300? I forget...) photos added to each album (or your photo stream).

On my N9, FlickrIUp tries to show thumbnails to all -- I think all -- of my pics.

You have two options as for now:
1) QuickFlickr - great UI design, "show photos near me" which is a very cool feature
https://openrepos.net/content/jpietrzak8/quickflickr
and the corresponding thread here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=95518
2) FlickrUp - has terrible splash screen and uglier interface, but has more features and you can actually upload photos,
although I haven't tried it myself
https://openrepos.net/content/shwstppr/flickrup
My proposal for the splash screen replacement for both Flickr clients can be grabbed from here:
