Guys. A friend here was impressed with my N900 and wondered if he could port Maemo or Meego into an Alcatel phone, which is running Android at the moment.

Another necromancy?

Yes if you can manage to purchase source code of closed parts of Maemo from Microsoft (more likely) or Nokia then the community will be happy to do the rest.

No if you can't do the above.

Pay Chuck Norris to get the source code from MS sounds easier than purchase the source code from MS.

I would love a Maemo5 style alternate UI for my Ubuntu Touch devices which will probably replace my N900.
The worst 'feature' of Ubuntu Touch is the lack of a close option for app windows/pages. Ubuntu does active app choosing in a sweet way especially with qtedger.

Forget even getting maemo on a soon to disappear single model device.
Aim smarter at a universal solution that has longevity across the board.

So rather in response to the actual thread question.

1- mer = one of the best chances still I believe...

2- maybe ...
https://wiki.gnome.org/Attic/Hildon/Building

it is getting a little old and hairy now...it may take some work.

3- and this ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuIrRoRPufc

Moises did a few youtube vids ..this has a very good chance to become a full distro...I did try contacting him a year or so ago for ideas and help ...no responses...you could try maybe get through to him..I think an official maemo rep writing him may get a response and help...or enough maemoans writing might do it too..

.I think this would be the best progression of maemo...freeing us to move in any direction...not just a specific device..or only embedded...or only ..whatever.

Myself ...I've extensively studied this topic and I come back to this project of freeing maemo from specific devices every 6 months and plug away at it..I have been personally successful...but in the grander scheme of making it easily distributable hmm..not quite yet... I can't say I'm overly successful since it's just lil'-ol'-me working at it....

I will say this though concerning getting maemo 4 or 5 to run on a tablet or laptop or convertible laptop-tablet.
The BEST success I have had is with the toshiba portege m700, m750 and m780 ....it is literally the best laptop-convertible-tablet with touchscreen and penabled interface that has worked stellar in regard to using maemo properly like we enjoy it.

Considering this is the best avenue for freeing maemo and potentially applying it to pretty much anything.

And considering this is a topic that just isn't going away, it has been asked, floated around for years and years and years...
and many, many people want it...

And considering doing so would extend our beloved platform lifespans massively into the future...

We really should...
As a whole community...
bend all our attention,
focus all our gazes,
throw all our best at this...
and finally do this.

If anything at all is done on the topic...

It should be tweaking and fine-turning mer and / or maemo 4 and / or maemo 5 ...
and plant it firmly on top of a bunch of proper "Respins" based on a stable rolling releases.
antiX, lmde2betsy, solydx/k, siduction are the best examples of ones I would aim for...

I'm sure there may be better harmonizing distros that would be easier for us to mangle maemo onto... that aren't rolling releases...but may have long term support for 1/2 a decade or so...like 'buntu's ..which may be easier.
Upkeep on a rolling is much easier than redoing a standard distro every so many months or years... but whatever port in a storm.

Past the primary necessity of maintaining our home here.

Past the secondary necessity of repository / catalog salvage, repository / catalog maintenance, and application repair, tweaking and upkeep.

This topic should be the tertiary necessity for our community.
To finally run maemo as a proper distro...
and as a consequence be able to expand from that point to wherever the desire takes us.

Once a proper distro we have a wide open vista of approach to other devices.
We would then have the same opportunities to exploit a variety of avenues just like any other distro....taking aim at smartphones, phablets, tablets, netbooks, laptops and desktops to name a few...

In turn ...once a distro, with the freedom from specific aging devices,
I don't predict, I'm SURE more and more people will become maemoans after enjoying the platform as a distro.
Which increases our community member base...just for a start..
It is a win win.

We really really should evolve from our N.I.T. earthly forms.
It isn't helping us not to.
We will have a beautiful platform trapped in crumbling bodies which will inevitably breathe their last and we will have nowhere to go from there.

We really need to do this for our continuance...for our survival

For something so "open", Maemo never was released to any other vendors by means that would be beneficial in this endeavor to install on other devices.

I find irony in that.
