Uh, I did not bother to check connectivity-test is online again!
Seems so, but responses are coming from
ictsvc.cloudapp.net

Anyone knows about that host? (having no idea where where it was hosted before)
if it is reliable source we do not need the backup service on maemo.org at all?

It may be that something is stored on the N9 during the first connection attempt. If you are still experiencing problems, I suggest deleting the network connection and creating it again.

It seems connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com came back online on 2016-01-04.

Edit: My reasoning is my home network connection was probably created before my server was up and running, and my work connection was created after.

I think it would be good to have a backup anyway. Who knows how long this server will last.

Okay, would say so, too.

But it is definitely not urgent topic.

Just checked the traffic that is exchanged:
Code:
> 2016/01/09 14:43:45.462310 length=122 from=0 to=121
GET / HTTP/1.1\r
User-Agent: \r
X-Nokia-WLAN-Connectivity-Test: true\r
Host: connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com\r
Accept: */*\r
\r
< 2016/01/09 14:43:45.468231 length=24 from=0 to=23
HTTP/1.1 204 No Content
and there is nothing suspicious (privacy) sent out from device. So whoever set up such service will not get to know anything about you/your device, just the IP of course.

connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com:

This morning it made again problems.
I checked and it seems http is online and delivers correctly:
~ $ wget --server-response --spider --header='X-Nokia-WLAN-Connectivity-Test: true' http://connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com
--07:19:03-- http://connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com/
=> `index.html'

BUT on searching this thread I found why I thought this service had been closed months ago:

So connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com was 403 in May 2015, but as long as it was returning 204 in reply to the X-Nokia-WLAN-Connectivity-Test header, it should have been OK. (Do we know it ever returned anything other than 403 to a request without the header?)

In December 2015, connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com was not responding at all.

I've checked my server logs for the last week and I can confirm now that if a wifi connection is created and the connectivity test is successful, that wifi connection is never tested again.
If a wifi connection is created and the connectivity test fails (or connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com is down), the connectivity test is run every time that wifi connection is established, and whenever it fails again the connection is changed to Manual.

There must be some setting stored on the N9, and it must be possible to change it.

Are you sure?
As I remember to have seen requests on my local 'server' whenever I activate WiFi.

It may be valid for your revert-to-manual settings problem.

After writing the above, I deleted my home network connection from my N9 and created a new one. It connected once to connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com (still redirected to my own server) and never again, even though I have left and returned home many times since then.

Not on purpose. Not on purpose. Definitely

It connected once to connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com (still redirected to my own server) and never again, even though I have left and returned home many times since then.
It is just that the output here (coming home tonight) looks like this:
Code:

~ # exec /usr/bin/socat -v TCP-LISTEN:80,bind=0.0.0.0,reuseaddr,f
ork SYSTEM:'echo HTTP/1.1 204 No Content'
< 2016/01/15 19:09:53.762146 length=24 from=0 to=23
HTTP/1.1 204 No Content
> 2016/01/15 19:09:53.763488 length=122 from=0 to=121
GET / HTTP/1.1\r
User-Agent: \r
X-Nokia-WLAN-Connectivity-Test: true\r
Host: connectivity-test.ext.nokia.com\r
Accept: */*\r
\r
Bound here explicitly to 0.0.0.0 and set /etc/hosts to my (fixed) internal IP.

Can somebody ask question there. How can I return to default settings? Uninstalling not helps.
