Is there a simple way to install apps to either the internal or removable memory cards on an N810?

I have read through some posts on the forums and seen procedures for installing the OS onto the internal card, but am a bit scared of doing this as i havnt had it very long lol

Is there a simpler method? If not, if i have problems with the clone to memory card can it be reversed by re-flashing the device? Will i get stuck with a boot load menu?

I can't help you with the installation issue, but as a last resort you'll always be able to get your tablet back to normal by reflashing it.

This would be a nice thing to know, too.

I know there's a least one thread out there that I think was something like 32 pages of brilliance and angst. I got to page 5 and gave up

I still have about 86MBs of space on my memory card and, suddenly, that doesn't seem nearly enough :::sigh:::

The "32 pages of brilliance" are for somebody else. Follow this thread, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...+clone&page=30, thread #292. Post back if questions, I have taken people thru this many times from 16G down to 1 G SD cards, ALL succeed.

Post if questions,

bun

Well, with all due and absolute respect, bun, *that* thread is now 33 pages and the subject of this thread and this subforum is: is there a *simple* way of installing apps on a memory card for a newbie.

Anything 'root'ie and scripty and requiring 33 pages is for the far braver experienced Linuxian than me, I'm afraid. Honestly... how do you guys not have your heads explode with all this? I am in genuine awe (and a bit scared)

I was rather hoping for a lovely appy somewhere hidden at Maemo.org that might magically do it.

I can dream, can't I?

Hehe, I havn't touched Linux but all my noobish skills come back to me. It's actually pretty easy.

@to the op.

You can restore original initfs easily. You won't believe how much times I did it when I was messing about with text2screen (look at my sig)

When you flash boot menu, you get to choose to backup original. Obviously backup.

Then when you need to restore:

cd initfs_flasher (obviously into the directory where you untarred)
./initfs_flash initfs.orig.jffs2

Do you want to flash this image (yes/no): yes
<Return>

Done!

BTW I do not mmc boot (I did for a while but I had no space for films (rubbish 1gb)) but I still keep bootmenu on . You can still boot of internal flash by default & you get usb recovery mode options too.

Maybe some1 could compile http://www.hczim.de/software/mmc-unionfs.html for OS2008/N800

I believe that bunanson meant the process is summarised in *post* #292 of that thread, i.e, at:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...&postcount=292

I too was put off by the size of that thread, but from the above post I am even thinking of trying it

However - after reading the referenced post for cloning the OS there remains the question:
"Simple way to install apps to memory card?"
For instance - I just tried to install FreeCiv, Default install complained not enough free room. I've plenty of room on my external cards, but filled up my internal.
If there was a flag for install on mmc1 or a folder selection as to where to install it would have been nice.

Isn't the answer to that question a simple "no"? There is no way to install apps to the memory card. Hence the need to clone the entire OS to the memory card?
