- if you just recv'd the unit yesterday, why did you upgrade? it was a very minor upgrade and if your unit did not experience a 'power on' problem then there was no need to upgrade...

- btw, i have not experienced any 'power on' problem w/either of my units (one running os2007 and the other os2008)...

- sorry to hear that you are having problems though... i'd be upset too, but would rather try others' suggestions here...

- i'm also surprised your 'friend' didn't include the 128MB SDHC that came stock with the n800?

In case you really believe it is the latest OS2008 that is causing the problems... what prevents you to flash to earlier OS version?

You can download all the OS versions released for N800 from:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N800.php

(After you feed your SN, it will show you available OS files.)

I flashed it because i did encounter the power on issue. Wouldn't boot until re moved the batter for afew mins, the plug the charger for a fw mins then it came back on. Weird thing is that... on that older firmware, file manager was also having trouble formatting card placed on either slots.

I then flashed it to the newer firmware hoping the problem would go away and to clean up the device. Apparently it introduces the application crash issue in addition to the fact that it still could not format my sd card (it's showing as corrupted).

I'll throw out a couple ideas:
-Did you restore a backup from a previous install?
-Have you installed many non-Nokia applications? What applications have you installed, especially beta applications like Modest and the new RTCOMM stuff?
-How many applications are you starting at once?
-How long has it been on before you see applications not quitting?

Thanks for all the reply guys, it helps me trying to narrow down what the issue is with this thing...

- I did not restore a backup, i have none.
- Non-nokia application: Bluetooth-PAN, Claws, LXDoom, ScummVM, MPlayer, rdesktop. Pretty much it...
- I was just running one app when the whole thing stopped responding
- Applications would stop responding at random times. I've seen it immediately crashing within a few minutes of booting the N800.

Right now, i just finished booting my N800, trying to open the memory from Control Panel but would not open. Control panel is now just blank. Pressing the close button gives me "Control panel is not responding. Close application?". I clicked ok, and the control panel is still there, not closing.

So, otjandra:

You bought this from your friend, who didn't use it much, but didn't have any particular problems? Then, the minute you bought it, you started noticing it had the power on problem? I wonder why your friend didn't have that problem?

How long had your friend had it? You can still try to get Nokia to take it back. Maybe your friend should try to take it back, unless he got it from a friend too.

Actually, come to think of it, my N800 with the latest OS has been acting funny as well, only since I upgraded it. The volume level when I was jogging just now went from low to high without my intervention. I had the screen and all turned off via the hardware menu.
This happened several times, not just once. This has NEVER happened to me, in the other hundred or so times I've been jogging with it. The other weird thing that happened BEFORE I went jogging is that when I ran YouAmp, the sound came through the speakers EVEN THOUGH I HAD HEADPHONES PLUGGED IN. I couldn't fix that, but changing to another media player (MediaBox, I think it was) got rid of that problem, but later is when I had the volume-changing problem.

I'm using that app "powerlaunch", for what it's worth.
