Hi all,
I've got a bunch of data I want to load into Maemo Mapper so I can find free WiFi spots across Japan. I', hoping to write a little script to turn it into GPX so I did one point by hand and tried to import it to Maemo Mapper, but it failed to open claiming it "Error parsing GPX file".

So I tried the gpx example as given on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPX_%28Data_transfer%29) and that failed too. Does anyone where have experience loading custom POIs into MM? What is the simplest format that I can use?

Take an existing POI file and put your data into it.

You can get one similar to what you are trying to do at maps.fon.com. FON's list of hotspots.

Thanks bluesubaru, What I did was get an existing GPX file from that site. It seems to have scanned ok but now it is stuck on picking a category for the new POIs. I think 5mb is too much to handle at once. So I'll start pruning t he data and see what happens with smaller sets.

I actually imported the FON POI file for the USA; after I pruned it down to NY NJ and part of PA.

Now that I think about it. I downloaded the csv file and pruned it in excel and then imported it into poiedit (I think that was the one) and saved it as a GPX.

edit: to say GPX not POI.

Is POI a format? As far as I'm aware, and I work for a fairly large personal/in-car navigation company, POIs are things, not a format. GPX is a format. So saving it 'as a POI" doesn't make it clear to me quite what you're doing. It's like saving something as an image rather than saving it as a JPEG.

OK got ya now. I'm now going to find a way to cut down the data. 26,000 points for Japan I think it said. and I'm not going near most of those.

I just posted my solution to add FON POIs to maemo-mapper in this thread:

Maybe it's of interest to you.
