If you use the "Download..." button in the "Manage Repositories" dialog, then Maemo Mapper should choose a reasonable default for the name of the database file, but just in case, make sure that the pathname that it chooses makes sense.

All right, downloading repositories brought the Yahoo ones. Unfortunately, the database file name got generated as 2.db and the Maemo Mapper complained that it cannot create the database. I had to manually replace it with YStreet.db and YSat.db in my home directory.

Few more comments, while we are at it:
* For some reason, position jumps a lot (by as much as 70 meters). Don't know why. I am using the internal GPS and it is inside a building, so that may be a problem.
* Why are there no combined (sat+street) Google maps on the menu? Is there something special about them?
* Is it possible to have a quick on-screen button that centers the map on the current GPS position and two more on-screen buttons for the zoom (the hardware ones are somewhat hard to use in certain positions).
* Can I circle an area on the map with the stylus and have the map instantly zoom to this area? (would require capturing stylus trajectory and computing its extent when it crosses on itself)

Wondered about that too, having those would sure be handy from time to time, but I think the VE(?) one does that?!?

I'd sure love to see, at least, the zoom buttons on screen rather than having to grope around for the tiny buttons on top while I am in traffic.

Any plans to support google's traffic feature? Not thinking real-time, though that would be cool, but if I download a route right before I leave, it would be nice to be able to overlay traffic conditions along that route (if available) so as to know where to "expect" traffic.

For those fortunate enough to be able to tether, it would be very nice to be able to download that on the go.

I do use the google traffic app in the garmin PALM VM and on occasion it has made the difference between leaving now and later.

First of all thanks to gnuite for the great job he's been doing!
In the following post nutter suggests that GDBM format could destroy the mmc card:

Is this true? Is it safe to use MM2.4 on the n810 using the internal memory (2Gb)?
Thanks!

This is almost definitely caused by poor GPS reception. The internal GPS receiver on the N810, in my experience, is not very sensitive. In my area of the world, even standing outside, the GPS fix is not very accurate. The internal GPS is almost useless to me.

Yes. Google implements their "hybrid" maps as two separate sets of PNGs, the road PNGs drawn on top of the satellite PNGs. Maemo Mapper does not (yet) have support for drawing two map repositories at once. Yahoo's hybrid maps do the same. Virtual Earth's hybrid maps use a single PNG for hybrid maps.

I have to this point shied away from on-screen buttons in favor of a cleaner interface, but I'm willing to entertain the idea of an optional toolbar. If I can dock it to the side instead of the bottom, and if I can find some reasonably usable, free icons, I'll try to add one in a future release.

Stylus tap-and-drag is already mapped to the pan operation. I guess I could either change that behavior to draw-extent-and-zoom-pan, or make it optional. It won't be high on my priority list, though....

Yahoo maps working perfectly for me out of the box. Thanks!

If I ever get around to implementing support for drawing multiple repositories at once, this will be the primary use case. Google already provides web access to traffic data - it's just a matter of implementing it as an overlay on top of another map repository.

This is absolutely not true. First of all, the N810's internal memory card is formatted with JFFS, which is optimized for flash media. But even if this were not the case (i.e. with FAT-formatted external memory cards), all modern memory cards implement wear leveling at the hardware level, regardless of the driver that is used. Even under intense usage, it would take many, many years to wear out even the cheapest memory card.

A class 6 SDHC card can write at 6 MB/sec. On a 4GB memory card, it would take 683 seconds to write to every block of a 4GB card exactly once. (Due to wear leveling, this occurs whether you're writing a 4GB file once or rewriting to the same 4-byte file a billion times.) Even the cheapest memory cards have blocks with a lifetime of at least 500,000 writes. If you were constantly writing data (without reading it), it would take 500,000 * 683 seconds (almost 11 years) for the memory card to fail.

Most people aren't constantly writing to their memory cards. And most memory cards support more than 500,000 writes per block. Flash memory is more likely to fail for other reasons before it fails for being written too much.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Maemo Mapper is one of the top five (top three?) apps on the tablets. Thank you, gnuite, for continuing development of this app.

Multiple, overlaid repositories is my top feature request. There are some great possibilities, including using satellite data from one source and street data from another, or street data from one source and traffic data from another...
