Hi,

Looks like I messed-up my N800.
I just resurrected it, after a looong time, I thought it was lost.

Well, I managed to re-flash the device to OS2008 (RX-34_DIABLO_5.2008.43-7_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM) (is this the latest one?) , and put all of the repos from gronmayer's site.

questions :

a/ So far so good, but everytime I am going to Applications > browse installable apps, there is an "updating" that take ages! do I have to do something about this? or was a bad idea to install too many repos and mess the OS?

b/ I now read on the forum that there is a 'newer' f/ware (Diablo-Turbo), but this involves clonning of the OS to internal SD (I have a fresh 16GB SDHC class10 I assume its fine to work with this), but as I read somewhere, the clonning and SD boot needs OS2008 < 43-7 ? So I need -again- to reflash the device with an older f/ware?

c/ btw could not find the correct procedure of cloning the internal OS to SD and the booting procedure

sorry guys for asking too many questions. if any help thanks in advance!

thx again.

just a bit of luck, I found that pbeasy script but SD cards can boot only a couple of times, then when boots from SD resets and goes back to boot menu. only option to boot normally is via boot to emmc,

I think the device is screwed up then (too many years unused) so can't boot from the SD then? probably on its way to trash can.

no.
no.
and no...
in any particular order.

First.
go to my signature.
you will find exactly what is needed.
"Pimp my N8x0"

In order.
Follow implicitly.
I even did a series of video on youtube .

don't fret...your device is not screwed up.
you are.
hahahaha..

ok seriously.
follow the directions...
it seems like a lot of verbiage in the instructions...
but it is extensive and misses nothing.
It goes from a full reflash of diablo, to cloning the pristine diablo just flashed to the internal sd card slot on a n800, to then upgrading the sd card diablo to diablo - turbo, to then referring to the proper set up of repositories , including the proper set up of the gronmayer catalog repositories...
(due to the fact that there are A- WAY too many catalogs there, B- The fact that there are MANY catalogs which are dead, and C- The fact that there are catalogs which either should NOT be enabled due to conflicts, duplication with existing catalogs already on device, or catalogs which should be added BUT NOT enabled until absolutely needed and then disabled upon acquiring whatever was needed from that specific catalog)
ALL is explained there.
Just doing blanket installation of all gronmayer repos will undoubtedly cause the above mentioned issues.
Also it normally takes some time for the tiny processor in it to update just the maemo standard repos...
adding more repos ...especially the mammoth list in gronmayer...even parts of it...
will add to time you must be patient to wait with catalog updating.
Breaking and halting catalog updating normally means you would have to reboot just to reset the catalogs properly and update properly again.
It is suggested ...when everything is installed properly from os to catalogs...to allow the catalog updating process to continue unhindered.

ALSO:
many times I mention and so have others ...
in their instructions...
when cloning...you must repeat the exact cloning process.
you must do it twice.
It is mentioned in pbeasy instructions .
No doubt you did not follow directions properly and specifically if you have no option to boot to the cloned sd card.

ALSO:
to answer your question.with pbeasy you can install any of the firmwares meant for your specific N8x0...
PenguinBait originally never got around to testing to see if it would work problem free...but states it should work no problem.
I have not encountered a problem using the most recent diablo firmware MEANT for the n800 or the most recent diablo firmware MEANT for the n810.
N810 sd card instructions are little different from the n800 card instructions....

HOWEVER:
N810 INTERNAL DEVICE cloning instructions are not to be done sloppily, cavalierly, messily, under the influence, impaired, in a bad mood, or in any other situation other than being completely alert and cognizant of your surroundings and what you are doing. Since you are messing with the internal of the n810 itself.
Instructions must be followed implicitly, there is no room for 2nd chances cloning to the internal of the n810 device itself.
Screw THAT up, and you very likely will have a brick.
So follow those instructions properly the 1st time.

Otherwise...
Cloning to internal card slots on the n810 and n800 are a piece of cake once one has done the process a few times.

Follow the instructions implicitly in "pimp my N8x0.
Following them properly has never resulted in a device that wouldn't work.
NOT following the instructions implicitly WILL result in a "start all over from the beginning " situation ..until you do the process properly.

your device is not broken.
Go and read, reread, rereread, then apply.
Once you have done the full instructions a few times it will become old hat.
and you will be able to go from a reflash to full turbo and everything you could cram into it..in under 1-2 hours.

the n8x0 line were pretty much bomb proof.
I have yet to find one that was unrecoverable ...
especially if following proper instruction.
If you are determined to think you have a damaged device ...
Ok....
just send it to me or anyone else here before chucking it in the garbage.

If I recall correctly, updating in appman always took ages.

I flashed with that version and cloning worked fine.

Thanks guys I will repeat the procedure again later as I need to do some tasks today...

@endsormeans

mate, indeed I am screwed up, obsolete device + obsolete info (dead sites/links) you are getting an idea

so far I found 3-4 different instructions for the cloning:
a/ manually
b/ via install-tools
c/ via console-tools (pbeasy)
d/ that link too:

Originally Posted by auouymous View Post

also the instructions of the console-tools are a bit confusing, in fact
I had the impression that they were instructions for the (older) install-tools -replaced later with console-tools, so I just followed "once" the
clone procedure. BTW looks like I need to just re-install the bootmenu and not to repeat the clone procedure again?

Its just I found this (thx to a friend that is involved with Chinese electronics)

translated via chrome, stellar info about the whole procedure, they only mention to install the bootmenu.

will report soon

cheers

One can use all number of various instruction available...
Most are not new-user-proof, in easy to understand format and instruction.
Many are incomplete instructions.
Even the official instruction in the wiki is not kind to newcomers who know little.

I suggest following my guide.
It includes many references to others work here, and fills in the gaps for those who are new to all this, or have forgotten the process due to the length of time between needed reflashes.

Yes ..there is little clarity in most old instructions. That is why I made the guide in my sig.
No...I cannot agree...the device is not outdated...
If one was never given a faster than light crap phone...first.
and given a n8x0 ...instead....THEN ...after a couple years enjoyment ...
given a modern piece of android or iphone crap...
You ...like many ...would either sit on said pile of offending crap and complain about the crap...
or...
find alternatives...
and/or...
go back to what was a good enjoyable n8x0 ...even ...n900 ...experience ...
the n8x0's did change my mind on the understanding of what obsolescence is...
Slower than modern device doesn't necessarily mean obsolete...
Not having for software ...what everyone else has ...isn't necessarily an obsolescence issue either.

possibly...you may just need to install the bootmenu...
I suggest starting over from scratch...with my guide.

Hi,

good news....

Device can boot from a class2 4GB SD card

(btw I had some issues with the email, but fixed when I deleted the .modest folder)

another question:

looks like the device lost the "charging boot mode" (I m not sure about the name of it), I mean when you plug-in the charger while the device is off, then boots to a screen that displays the charging not at the main OS. , is there any option to enable it?

Something is off then.

If you cloned properly ...

When you plug in the charger from a device "off" state...
with the n800 n810

what should occur is the boot screen should pop up to give you the choice of the internal onboard os or the cloned sd card os
as option before timeout.
then it goes to a proper "charge" state and portrays info depending upon which of the two os's one has initiated .

Just fiddling with the bootmenu and everything "seeming" to run ok...
does not equate to a certainty that you have done steps along the way properly.

If you did anything other than my suggested...I cannot guess where or what you did...or if you did whatever ...correctly.
At a guess...if charging is screwed up...
then you did not do something correctly.

If you did the suggested method I advised ...from beginning to end... then you have a device performing properly.
It has been used by many.
It works
Every time.
I use it myself when it is time to reflash a n8x0 ....years later...
when I couldn't be bothered to commit to memory the totality of the process.
It just works.

and IF that doesn't work...you are omitting something ...
then I would suggest documenting exactly every keystroke and every step with documented results.
quickly we could figure out where issues lie....and remedy them immediately.

Trying to troubleshoot in the dark...considering god-only-knows-what-you've-done ...as far as which method of installation instructions....
running with scant info ..
concerning what I understand so far as ...
an improperly installed os...and an attempted hack on top of it hoping bootmenu is "fixed" ...

all that...

Doesn't work for me...

I really do like to help...
But time is a luxury I have little of currently to spend on.
I already spent a ton of time doing the complete and total newbie, idiot-proof, you-can-be-half-asleep-doing...walkthrough and companion video ...

The only time one would deviate from the prescribed walkthrough is to do some research and testing of various firmwares ...older than diablo...say..

I suggest...
start over
Do it again.
From beginning to end.
then you know you did everything right...or somewhere went wrong...and it can be sorted out.

You won't break your device.
and it won't hurt to learn more about how everything works...and get practised at it.

thanks mate for your time...

well, you can't believe it : problematic adaptor tip! I moved it a little and noticed that battery did not even went to charge mode!
I am using another adapter now
So the issue happened because the device that time did not receive any power from the adaptor, wtf coincidence, I can't believe it.

You won't break your device.

yeah the firmware is unbreakable
I realised it while flashing the f/w N800 , I used an old laptop (win2k), so in one moment the USB driver disconnected from the OS -driver stopped working - the flashing procedure interrupted. Nice to see the N800 did not died, it just rebooted to NOKIA logo again giving me the opportunity to reflash it again.

I know it was just a loose plug but...

The charging screen is displayed by systemui or ASUI in runlevel 5. Normal desktop mode is runlevel 2. There are symlinks in /etc/rc5.d/ that point to scripts and programs to run when entering and leaving the charging runlevel. You should have links in there to osso-systemui(-early)? or
advanced-systemui(-early)? (if you use ASUI). Now you know!
