Wow, I don't know how this happended because I haven't done anything remotely experimental today. I'm afraid I can no longer install software on my N800 (OS2008)

Trying to update the application manager repositories with "Toos>Refresh application list" I get "Unable to refresh application list. Unable to access catalogs. Check network connection. Try again?" The network connection is fine.

Check log. Log says "E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/htto could not be found."

This sounds bad, like my apt installation is corrupted or something.

I initially ran into the problem when clicking an "install" link at Maemo.org (for Xournal.) Tried rooting myself and "apt-get update" gave the same message as in the log.

Ideas? Any help much appreciated! TIA!

one of your application catalogues has htto:// instead of http:// in it's address.
fix that and it'll work.

Excellent! That did it!

I should have noticed that there were two Maemo Extras repositories. One indeed started htto://
I must have clicked a malformed link somewhere to get that second one. If I knew where I would post a warning here.

Thank you for the help.

Found the corrupting link. It is the OS2008 Xournal install link at Maemo.org (v0.4.2.1, updated 2008-04-18 10:22 UTC)

"Click to Install" at your own peril.

Same err message, different reasons.

I removed the /var/cache/apt/archives/partial to save space. I put it back, everything is fine.

sudo gainroot
mkdir /var/cache/apt/archives
mkdir /var/cache/apt/archives/partial

hope this helps somebody someday,

bun

Hi All
I too noticed my application manager doesn't seem to complete the refresh; gets stuck at 8kB. Log file seems to indicate that claws mail is the culprit, I haven't a clue how to fix. (please see below) . Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

Don't know if this will work, but when I was getting "Operation Failed" in App Manager, this trick worked:

Run, I think as root, in Xterm:

Code:
dpkg --configure -a
For me, all that appeared to happen was that I was returned to the prompt. But it magically fixed any corruption problems.

I am having same issue but have no idea how to do these things that you are all saying. I cannot install anything anymore. It hangs when updating App Manager at very end of download, can someone walk me through what I need to do?

My guess is that you haven't installed becomeroot; and if you can't install anything, then you can't install becomeroot now; and if you can't install becomeroot, I don't see how you can be in root in Xterm.

If you have becomeroot installed, you just open Xterm -- look around your list of applications and you'll find it -- and type

sudo gainroot

and then click enter. Your prompt will change from $ to #. Then type what I have in Post #7 and click enter.

But if you enter "sudo gainroot" and that doesn't get you to the # prompt, then I don't know what you can do other than flash the device and start over. (Before flashing, first do a backup.)

Maybe someone else will come along and tell you how to get around the problem of not being able to do the "sudo gainroot" thing.

Good luck.
