Yes. Abiword can read\write Word files, Gnumeric can read\write Excel files, and Evince can read PDF files.

Evince (rotated and full screen showing a PDF)

But Abiword hasn't been fully ported to OS 2008 (yet) so has a few problems mainly with text input on a N800, which can be solved using a virtual keyboard program, a Bluetooth keyboard, or sticking with OS 2007.

I myself use the Basilisk II Mac emulator for Word\Excel files.

PDF no problem, you can even annotate PDFs, Word and Excel are more troublesome, you can use Abiword and Gnumeric to read Word and Excel files but they're not very stable. Especially Abiword. There's a doc reader of a kind too, though shows only the text with antiword.

Not very fast, am I

I only use my PPC to run a game called Hot Death Uno.

The N800's big, high resolution screen is mainly why I bought it ... to read eBooks. Only expensive PPCs have a screen near this size.

But the N800 also works great to watch movies and listen to music. Unlike the Apple iPods, no headphones are needed (but can be used). There are many music players available for the N8x0.

Check out this page for the Multimedia programs (and there are more not listed like xmms): http://maemo.org/downloads/OS2008/multimedia/

Hopefully someone else can post a more objective view about the N800 as I'm crazy about mine.

This is the place for questions.

I consider the sound quality through the headphones to quite good. They won't please an audiophile (but nothing would) but the quality stacks up fairly well against other media players. I also use my external speakers of my N810 (and formerly my N800) quite frequently although the bass response on those is not great.

No EQ though. Not in any of the players I have tried anyways.

Oh ... and annotating PDFs and resaving them as PDFs with xournal works superbly.

Word docs can be read using doc Reader:

https://garage.maemo.org/projects/docreader/

You'll also have to install Antiword 0.37-1:

http://erinye.com/maemo/

doc Reader will allow you to convert Word docs to text file or PDF.

Yes, it does high speed transfers over USB. The camera is 640x480 and produces images of very low quality.

A word of warning: Some of the software that people are talking about in this thread can be a little tricky to install! The software that comes with the N800 is easy to use and generally works fairly well. That includes the web browser and PDF viewer. Abiword (for viewing word files) and Gnumeric (for viewing excel files) are not considered stable software yet. Xmms (music player with EQ) is also not the easiest thing to install.

If you want something that "just works" I would suggest you just get a PPC. If on the other hand, you have time to spend to learn how to use an N800, it's a very nice device. it just takes some effort.
