The n800 connects as a USB mass storage device, so that's a new one to me.

With the n800 plugged in, open up device manager (System control panel, Hardware tab, Device Manager) and look for any devices with a yellow ! or any devices with a ? mark for an icon. Remove the n800 and see if any disappear: if so, plug the N800 back in, right-click the icon, and select update driver.

Let me know what happens: posting a screenshot of your !/?-marked devices in device manager might help too.

Amazingly enough, the same thing just happened to me for the first time... and it's very perplexing.

I've been flashing N800s on this Windows XP laptop since preproduction days, and never ran into this sort of thing, but now the laptop refuses to recognize the N800 when it's in Update Mode. I can browse the installed SD cards just fine... but Windows claims it can no longer find drivers if the N800 is connected via USB in Update Mode!

What a crock. Even reinstalling the Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard didn't help. And using this same tablet, other PCs I've tested work fine-- so the problem is definitely confined to my laptop. And yeah, Device Manager says it doesn't recognize the tablet BUT updating drivers does nothing-- Windows says it has none. !!!

Interestingly enough, the Video Controller is allegedly suffering the same thing, but video works fine. Arg!

You could try to install maemo-statusbar-usbnet, it's supposed to be possible to use it to enable/disable usbnet (toggle between usb storage and network is what I think it does).

should link to the os2008 click-to-install, if I did this correctly.

SOLVED!!!

It turns out that my problem was the version of the Nokia Connectivity Driver for USB cables that came with a beta of PC Suite. Uninstalling that driver and installing the current released version fixed the hardware recognition problem! It may work for the OP. After reinstalling the driver, connect the N8x0 in update mode and it should work.

Driver found here: http://europe.nokia.com/A4144937

I will update the bug with this.

I had to reopen bug 2913 with the following comments:

I wanted to add further detail:

Cable driver 6.85.10.0 works. That's what I am currently using.

But 6.86.11.0 does NOT work. Something has broken between the two versions, at
least where the N800 is concerned.

I discovered this when I updated PC Suit to the latest build of 6.86.
Immediately I was back to the same problem of being unable to flash my tablets.
This needs to be investigated.
So beware PC Suite 6.86!

Thanks! This tip worked for me. I had to go to another site to get the older Cable Connectivity drivers though. I searched for "Nokia_Connectivity_Cable_Driver_rel_6_85_10_0_eng .msi" and found the following site:

Wow - strange problems.

I'm glad I'm using my Nokia tablet with (Ubuntu)Linux computers only...

Cheers
