I recently got an N800 tablet. I've updated everything to the OS2008, which runs beautifully for me. I just have a couple questions - I did search the forums, and found some great info, but not an answer for these (at least that made sense to me - I know just enough about computers to get around, but this is my first linux system, and I don't know much at all about programming outside of basic web design.)

ERMINIG question:

I installed GPE Calendar, and found several sites/threads that recommend and explain Erminig as a way to sync Google Calendar with GPE, which I would *very* much like to be able to do. In trying to install it, however, I've run into some problems.

What I've done:

I installed Canola and the Maemo Blogger client to make sure that I had the proper version of Python runtime on my system. A friend with some Linux skills checked and made sure that the proper version of Python runtime (2.5) is on my system.

I tried to get the gdata client from the developer's homepage and could download a file, but when I tried to install it it said that it couldn't install the file. I then searched and got the gdata client zip file off of the google code site, and could unzip it, but it was a group of folders/files and no install that I could find. When I attempted to install the one from the developer's page with that on my system I got the same error as before.

Attempted to install erminig anyway - install went fine, but erminig won't load.

One place had directions to install via the root menu (in x term) but my weblet is asking for a password, and I don't *have* one for the root. The one to lock/unlock the device screen/keys doesn't work there.

Tethering Question:

My current cel contract is just about up. Currently, I have Verizon, but since I have the weblet now, as well as a wireless laptop with bluetooth, I'm very interested in a plan that allows using a cell-phone as a modem for times when I'm not around wireless connections. I've seen several explanations of "workarounds" to make different phones work, and some speculation about which plans may or may not mind or notice you using the phone that way - but does anyone know of a site/post/etc that just gives a good comparison of wireless plans and their data-plans/rules/rates? Most of the online comparison sites just focus on talk time and text-messaging, and where they mention "web access" they don't specify if that's only on the phone itself or tethering.

I've seen a few sites that talk about a seperate wireless data plan for a laptop - but those seem to involve cards to install and not the use of the phone as a modem. Do any of you have experience with certain plans - if so, what are the rates/rules?

(I'm particularly interested in Cricket - they say that they've got an unlimited plan for about $50 a month including web access, but nowhere on the site do they clarify if that includes use as a modem.)

Thanks in advance - if you need more details about either of these questions, feel free to email me or reply!

Well if you really want to pay for it ATT allows teathing your phone to laptop plans are here http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-pho...hone-plans.jsp but it requires you have a Smartphone or a Blackberry. There is a sprint thing I see some people talking about on here Sero that has unlimited data not sure if it allows tethering or not. I for one still just use my ATT Media Net since that is only thing ATT will allow me to use on my phone and hey its unlimited for $15 a month. I really don't care if it breaks there policy since they wont let me use there other service. Also try searching around here for some info on cell phone stuff. http://www.howardforums.com/

Sprint Sero is about the best deal around. I have a Palm Centro on a SERO plan.
I specifically chose a phone that allows for tethering. The Centro does both Bluetooth and USB tethering. Sprint offers an additional service called Phone-As-Modem or PAM for an additional $9 a month. This specifically allows one to tether to a laptop. However, there are other non-Sprint options.
See http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/ for PDANet.

SERO is only available online at http://sprint.com/sero

Disclaimer: I haven't used my phone to tether as yet, but I plan to in the not too distant future.

I would second the suggestion to check out the SERO plan. I recently jumped ship to it from Verizon for exactly these reasons. It looks like the free text message promotion has been extended to May 31, so you might want to do it sooner rather than later, and port your number when your contract expires if you're a big texter.

I use my N800 bluetooth tethered through a Palm Treo 755p, and the performance is very adequate. If you want better speed, I imagine a USB connection might prove better assuming support on the N800 side. The Bluetooth speed in the Treo 755p is not quite what it could be, but I'm not complaining.

Oh, one word of warning.. Sprint customer service is the 7th ring of Hades. You might want to check this site for more information on the SERO plans.
