I hope we really get something this year but the part marked in bold makes it quite unlikely to me. Personally I don't believe it can be made so quicky. At least my impression is that previous tablets were in development much longer than half year or so. I guess more than year was needed. Also the development of Diablo started long before 'earlier this year' and we still don't have this 'minor bugfix release' ;-)

Still end of the year is just about time to have next model so I hope the "development supposedly started earlier this year" part is false (which of course sheds some light on the other part :-)

We'll see. I'm a bit sceptical.

I really hope they didn't listen to all the whiners *****ing about "too frequent" hardware releases.

"too frequent hardware releases"?!

The IT market is about to get flooded with x86 Moblin-based devices. Unless Nokia releases a significant upgrade soon (ie. 3x faster CPU and a stable, non-beta-like OS), they shouldn't even bother releasing another IT.

Yes, the market is about to get flooded with $1000-class, twice the power-consumption Atom-based machines. (The ones unveiled thus far are at or over $1000, and Atom is the best x86 around for power, but way behind ARM.)

Nokia's generally expected to be coming out with an OMAP3430- (or so) based IT running about twice the clock-speed at about the same power levels by year's end or so. Probably around the same $400 price point.

Why should Nokia be running for it's life again? OS is the only complaint I can grant you, and it's not as unstable and beta-like as you might think. Especially with Diablo; HWR (really, stylus input generally) is improved dramatically, and in general it feels much more finished than OS2008 at first did, and even better than OS2007. And it's not even released yet.

I was this year at the Cebit, and tried a Mid from Gigabyte (I think it was one)

Software and hardware were both horrible. The software lasted very long to respond. The Mid was rickety and warm.

The Mids are too expensive, don't have enough battery time and totally lack of a usable interface.

Nobody would criticize it, if there's a next-gen IT soon, if the new ITOS is able to run on the old tablets too.

The pending release of all these MIDs can be looked at two ways:

1. More pressure on Nokia in a limited potental market
2. Validation that the market for such devices is vast and ever growing

Not that there isn't some middle ground but my vote is for the latter.

I think that Nokia's profit margin on the tablets is sufficient for them to reduce prices considerably and thus make them much better value than the MIDS, so when they begin to feel the squeeze expect better pricing.

The only thing I *don't* want Nokia to do in introducing new hardware is change processor to an entirely different family, or to Atom, and thus kill any possibility at binary compatibility with older models.

I think the purely technical issues would prevent this, and that's not even factoring in business, economic, community or software issues.

Something mischevious to add fuel to the fire:

http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail/mae...ay/017787.html

The core maemo team at Nokia will be busy
more or less on those dates [end of September 2008].

You will know what happens around those dates next week in LinuxTag.
Humourous discussion on #maemo is focusing around wish-fulfilment: N900 ;-)

Hee hee hee!
