Hi, I want to develop an application much like Ear Master Pro (http://www.earmaster.com/pro/index.htm) for 2008OS. However, I'm not too sure where to start.

Quickly, the software basically has lots of samples of different instruments, so the program is able to play chords and sequences and quiz you on what they are.

How would I even approach a project like this?
I figure the following might need to be involved...
Alsa, Vst, Timidity
That's as much as I can figure.... can anyone point me in a direction I need to start reading... I'm determined to getting this project off the ground.
A lil' ambitious this project tho.

I'd start here and read down the page:

I was hoping that that wudn't be the response.... ok...
I have that page under my belt... There's a little part of the tutorial that deals with a D-BUS example... that gave me an insight to using libraries.

What am asking if not for help with the GUI and how I'll add components to the page, that's the easy part.

I'm not sure about how the other technologies will be involved and pieced together to emulate the underlying functionality of the program.. Such as:
- playing a sample
- combining different samples and playing them simulatenously
- where I would even get the samples

Ahh, I see what you're looking for now. I'd suggest looking at the source of a mixing program like Audacity for how they do some of their sampling, etc.

I'm not very knowledgeable on audio playback outside of Java, so hopefully someone can jump in here with a bit more information.

Woah, if you need any beta-testers waaaay down the road, I'm in! I contacted Ear Master a while ago concerning a linux version, and it's most-definitely a no-go. Good luck with this project, I'm afraid my only contribution will be waving the pom-pons and kicking my feet up like a girl (no offense to the cheerleaders out there ;P)
