i just recently sold my iPhone (4gb) for 400$ (!!) and then bought N810 for 360$. so far loving it, but i have a couple of questions..

1st: how to become root in terminal?
2nd: does the load applet slow down he system? seems like it.. a bit..
3rd: is there a program that will automatically lock my device when i close it?
4th: why is the web browser so slow..?
5th: what is boingo?
6th: i don't get how to manually give the IP settings to the connection manager.. say, if i don't have DHCP on my WiFi router.
7th: is it true that the more apps i install the slower the system gets?
8th: i still couldn't get GPS working well in Maemo mapper..
9th: is there a Maemo version of liquid wars?
10th: is there a nicer email client for n810? for example, i loved the one in iPhone.
11th: in the default chat program, in GTalk, is there a way to show the whole status of a person?

more questions coming!

thanks if you answer any, or if you don't.

  1. Download easyroot/becomeroot and do "sudo gainroot"
  2. Probably?
  3. I don't have an N810, but I thought there's one that can do stuff on keyboard close (or ambient light sensor).
  4. Don't know
  5. A Wi-Fi location service IIRC
  6. Don't know
  7. Not any more than on your computer; unless programs are running in memory.
  8. Don't know
  9. Don't know
  10. No?
  11. Don't know, Pidgin lets you read it if you tap a person's screen name.

Q No 4

Have you updated to the new operating system "Diablo". User report snappier running of the web browser. Also new mail program, may serve your purposes better, although "Nicer" is rather subjective.

If not updated, and you want to go down that route, back up first, then go to the Nokia web site and download the updating software. You should only update when you have made yourself aware of the reviews that you will find if you search for "Diablo" in the forums. Most love it, some not so.

May help.

I'm lazy so my responses will be inline...

Quick comment: There's a lot of stuff you can do with this thing (it's a small computer), so you'll probably want to get used to using the Google search bar on this site and browsing the wiki. maemo.org has a browseable app repo.

If you're geeky, you might want to install ssh in addition to becomeroot (ssh asks for the root pass on install)

2nd: does the load applet slow down he system? seems like it.. a bit..
Not sure. Wouldn't surprise me.

3rd: is there a program that will automatically lock my device when i close it?
There are a variety of programs that allow configuration to hardware events. I think there's one app that lets you put your finger over the light detector (not sure what that's called) for a few seconds to lock.

4th: why is the web browser so slow..?
A 400mhz cpu with 128mb RAM? There is a beta mobile firefox, but you'll be less impressed with that.

5th: what is boingo?
Already answered.

6th: i don't get how to manually give the IP settings to the connection manager.. say, if i don't have DHCP on my WiFi router.
If you edit a connection, the last screen in the wizard has an advanced link.

7th: is it true that the more apps i install the slower the system gets?
Not that I've seen. Any app that runs a daemon will slow it down though.

8th: i still couldn't get GPS working well in Maemo mapper..
Make sure you select bluetooth and leave the path blank. Upgrading to the latest maemo release (Diablo) has helped a lot, but still takes a few minutes

9th: is there a Maemo version of liquid wars?
Doubt it.. if it's not in games.

10th: is there a nicer email client for n810? for example, i loved the one in iPhone.
Haven't looked in to e-mail, etc, but I doubt you'll find anything like what's on the iPhone any time soon.

11th: in the default chat program, in GTalk, is there a way to show the whole status of a person?
Not sure. I've only used pidgin on the n810, but I was under the impression it uses Pidgin libs for a lot of the work so it's probably possible, although it may require code changes

more questions coming!

thanks if you answer any, or if you don't.

thanks andreww, that program that locks if its dark, is called autolock, and it started annoying me after a while. i tried firefox, and it is really damn slow. w2hats the point of boingo? and, last question, why doesnt anyone use gizmo? the reason why i dont really like pidgin is because of easy statyus changing.. and when a message comes, i just like it how it does it. sorry, i dont realy know how to explain.

Ah... I don't mind if you don't like Pidgin... the interface could certainly use some work for the tablet. I don't use it often so I don't really mind.

Boingo is, if I remember correctly, a wireless provider. Every time I have my laptop in an airport I see a Boingo hotspot (I think). Their website probably has much more info than I can give you

I've seen posts here about gizmo, but I use the n810 as more of a car media/nav device rather than for the internet functionality, so I don't know the pros/cons.

There's an app around that I've read is complicated to configure but gives users a lot of power when handling hardware events. I'll update if I can find it.

Ah, here it is:
http://powerlaunch.garage.maemo.org/

Hope I'm correct about what it accomplishes.

re: email apps
afaik (and someone will probably correct me) the 2 major email apps are claws and modest (which is now default app in diablo)
neither do exactly what i want
modest is more user friendly than claws
but you can modify claws through the menu
i am not that advanced a linux user (i am a relative noob) to know how to "go under the hood" to modify modest
