Hmm. I had thought of making .shrc executable, but not .profile.

Still doesn't work though. After 2 reboots still no ENV var in the xterm console, same as before... What else can I have done wrong ? :-)
(all versions of xterm are supposed to do this, right ? There are several floating around I think)

Any extra spaces on that export line in your .profile?

There's only one space on that line.

export ENV=$HOME/.shrc

Checked, but no. That file is correct anyway, because when I sh --login the .profile the .shrc are executed fine, and the ENV var is there.

I think it just isn't being executed at boot and there is no ENV var in xterm.

I wonder if this has anything to do with "becomeroot" being installed ?

Thanks for all your help, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to carry my manual hack :-)

Hi,

I have still the same behaviour as fpp, but like he is mentioning, doing the sh --login, or /usr/bin/bash --login in my case (since I have installed bash recently) isn't that much work, isn't it.

Anyhow, thanks for all the usefull information you have provided.

Cheers, Jan

If you're using bash, you might want to use .bashrc
