make symbolic link :
#ln -s /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.2 /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.1

Run this in xterm:
ln -s /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.2 /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.1

If you are getting a permission denied error, install this first:
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/rootsh/

then, run xterm again, and type:
sudo gainroot

then:
root

then this again (if you have ran this before you can just tap up the nav key twice to access the command line history):
ln -s /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.2 /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.1

then try running fring again.

Just a note, you don't need to run root after running sudo gainroot as you already are root by running sudo gainroot.

Btw, thanks for linking to my package.

and if one is using rootsh there could be just:
rootsh ln -s /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.2 /usr/lib/libhildonmm-1.0.so.1

Dude
After following the instruction you listed here, it did in fact work amd Fring did installed, but now my network is totally WACKED. The internet connection keeps popping on and off and my networked printer wants to to reinstall the software for some reason, not to mention the N800 can not longer connect to the internet. The only way I can get back on the net is to turn off the printer and the N800. HOW DO I UNDO THIS?

For people who are not very familiar with linux command line and have a problem with running fring after installation on N800/N810 (Maemo OS diablo version)!

1. Uninstall fring.
2. Open the catalogs window in Application manager. Disable "maemo Extras" catalog which have empty Distribution field in it's properties.
3. Refresh catalogs.
4. Install fring again.

This problem shouldn't happens on N800/N810 (Maemo OS chinook version)
