My username doesn't include '@gmail.com', just the part before @. Have you tried it that way?
Have you enabled imap/pop at the google settings? By default they are off.

The Modest wizard suggests most of these options when you enter a new account for gmail with POP so I'm surprised that
- (a) it doesn't work and
- (b) that it doesn't report any errors as to why it's not working .
