I like to watch a show on CNBC on my way to work each morning. I currently download the show (Kudlow & Co.) from MSN Money videos (CNBC have locked down their site pretty well so you can view but i haven't been able to save from there) using Firefox and any one of the myriad of available extensions on a PC so that i can transfer it to my N810 for offline viewing the following morning on the train.

However, i'd like to eliminate the PC from the process and rely on the N810 solely. mYTube does this sort of thing pretty well with YouTube vids so the ability to save flv files has clearly been developed. Now I just need to be able to do this from other sites.

Any suggestions?

When you know the URL of the flv movie you can just download it to the N8x0. But if you don't know the URL there are PHP scripts which explore the server and the URLs to get the FLV movies.
Google around with e.g. PHP get FLV URL

If you have a hosting provider with server scripting (probably PHP) you can let the server do the download.

If you run Easy Debian you could get iceweasel and get one of the many Firefox Plugins for downloading Flash from a page.. IE: DownloadHelper.

Now, that's a great solution! Let me take a crack at it over the next couple of days and I'll report back here with my success or a further request for assistance if you don't mind.

I had previously read that those FF solutions ran fairly slow. I am not familiar with Easy Debian or iceweasel (I'll do my due diligence later), but how fast or acceptable is the performance?

Meh... I personaly don't use it for day to day browsing .. I prefer midori or epiphany for that... Not that it's "atrociously" slow or anything.. but when there is faster alternatives we'll definitely go for that.

But just for the purpose of what you want you could take 10-15 mins to go to the page, download your video and close iceweasel...

It'll take you a little LONGER than doing it on a desktop for sure.. however I don't know how long it takes you to transfer from the DT to the NIT .. so you may just break even.

Course I haven't actually -tried- downloadhelper since I got flash to work in debian.. So I will try it tonight and let you know if it's worth it . I just know it's "theoretically" possible..

Ok i verified iceweasel works.. I used Fast Video Download (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3590) because unplug wa not compatible and im to lazy to fix it. I also recommend FlashBlock in order to speed things up.

Install wget on the N810. Once you get the flv URL, wget will download it for you. Unfortunately The N810 MicroB browser doesn't have a view source function which is how I find the flv URLs on the web pages that displays them. Youtube makes it very easy to get the URL but others don't.

It is even more easy than that. The flash video player caches the flv in the internal mmc tmp directory, look for a file named Flash*, so once the video starts playing pause it and let it download the video for you, when it is complete copy or rename it with flv extension and play it with mplayer. Works with most sites.
