Two brothers have implemented the open LCARS standards on the Gnome-based Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. The theme includes Star Trek sounds and a complete LCARS makeover for the interface. LCARS is the computer panel interface used in Star Trek the Next Generation. Best of all, the theme is completely free!

I saw this on Planet Maemo a few days ago and thought that it looked like quite a good mockup. I just looked at the video on youtube and was impressed at the tremendous job with all the sounds integrated.

Congrats on all the fame and webserver death that being Dugg brings :]

Hopefully this brings in some more trekkie (trekker? ... I'm not getting into that debate) 770 fans :]

The text is to dark/unreadable in some apps so I had to uninstall it. The sounds I left in for fun

Good news... I took some time to figure out the gtkrc file so that I could set different colors for specific elements, rather than larger categories. Much better contrast now. See http://synthesize.us/LCARS_PADD for the new .deb (and some screenshots).

Looking much better. Waiting on the news reader fix before trying again.

Unfortunately I think the news reader defines it's own text color there, rather than accessing the standard colors set in the gtkrc file. Unless I'm wrong about that, it won't be easy to fix the issue while still keeping a black background :/

It's a lame workaround, but the desktop news reader applet works fine to browse titles, which you can then click to open into the reader and get the details. Since the titles list in the reader program is the only area with black on black, and the desktop applet provides a readable copy of the same list, you can get similar functionality. Like I said, it's not exactly ideal, but it does work for those who really want to use the theme but depend on the feed reader.
