Google acquired Jaiku in late 2007 and noted at that time, "Activity streams and mobile presence are important areas where we believe Google can add a lot of value for users. Jaiku's technology and talented team are a great addition to Google's current application and mobile teams."

Google hasn't seemed to move Jaiku forward since their acquisition [and has] lost a great opportunity for activity streaming with Jaiku.
Guess Mauku will have to go all Twitter at some point, now.

Actually, the Google announcement regarding Jaiku doesn't say Jaiku will be "killed". It's actually a bit more complex than that:

As we mentioned last April, we are in the process of porting Jaiku over to Google App Engine. After the migration is complete, we will release the new open source Jaiku Engine project on Google Code under the Apache License. While Google will no longer actively develop the Jaiku codebase, the service itself will live on thanks to a dedicated and passionate volunteer team of Googlers.

With the open source Jaiku Engine project, organizations, groups and individuals will be able to roll-their-own microblogging services and deploy them on Google App Engine. The new Jaiku Engine will include support for OAuth, and we're excited about developers using this proven code as a starting point in creating a freely available and federated, open source microblogging platform.

The founders of Jaiku have still plans for their service. It has been quite clear after the acquisition that Jaiku is only 20 % project for them and Google has no interest on it. Please, read a blog entry by Jyri Engeström before making any speculations:

http://www.zengestrom.com/blog/2008/...etrospect.html

What is going to happen is actually an excelent thing: Jaiku Engine will be open source! That is also told in the original article and several other related stories:

http://searchengineland.com/google-e...ll-jaiku-16166

And yes, there are plenty of plans for Mauku too.

Sorry, wasn't trying to speculate, just reporting how CenterNetworks was reporting the news. No mention of it living on as a microblogging engine. Now if only I could rename the thread "Google CLOSES Jaiku."

"Google moves Jaiku to open source engine" is very different than "Google kills Jaiku".

It sounds more like "Google Opens Jaiku" as it is planning to open source the Jaiku Microblogging engine.

I also vote for a change in thread title, this is great news. Instead of letting the service die ala GrandCentral google is actually providing a great engine to the OSS world.

True, true!
Well, I tried changing the title of the original post but it doesn't update the title of the thread, so it's out of my hands.
