Hey guys,

I searched the threads and could not really find a direct answer to my question. I'm trying to buy Expense Diary from palmgear.com which the 30 day trial version I downloaded works great on GVM. BUT when I try to buy the software it says I need to give my Hot Sync User ID before I can buy. What is my Hot Sync User ID and where can I find it? I have no idea what I am doing and am totally confused. Thanks for all your help.

Should I post this in the N810 forum?

Guys,

Maybe everyone thinks this is such a stupid question that no one wants to answer it, but I have a really really really small understanding of how to find out my hotsync number. I would be estatic if someone would answer me. Thanks everyone

Have you installed Palm Desktop on, well, a desktop or notebook computer? If so, that software will have prompted you to enter a HotSync ID during installation. That HotSync ID then propagates to Garnet VM on your tablet during your first successful network HotSync.

If you aren't HotSyncing, then Garnet VM likely doesn't have a HotSync ID saved. In this case, you may be able to set one from the command line:
  1. Open X Terminal.
  2. Type the following, substituting the HotSync ID and numeric ID you'd like for "your name" and "dddd" respectively:
    Code:
    /usr/bin/gvm/gvm -u "your name:dddd"
  3. Tap enter.
  4. Close X Terminal.

I haven't used, or even installed, GVM in quite some time, so I probably won't be able to provide much further assistance, but I'll answer what I can.

Hey thanks a lot for the reply. Ok, I downloaded Palm Desktop and installed it but It never asked for me to give a HotSync ID. Where do I go from here?

Also, I completed your instruction with X-Terminal. Does this mean that the number I added is now my HotSync Number which I can then use to buy my Expense Diary? Thanks a lot!

Perhaps it's the first time you initiate a HotSync that the software asks you to enter a HotSync ID. I'm sorry to say I don't remember. It's just been too long since I worked with anything Palm.

Possibly. If the purchase amount is small enough to happily risk failure, you might give it a try.

If I recall correctly though, earlier releases of GVM had a nasty habit of sometimes forgetting the HotSync ID and Number, so I can't guarantee that what you entered even stuck. Also, though I used Palm devices for many years, I don't recall ever having to deal with HotSync Numbers, and I certainly never had to deal with them in the short time I tried GVM, so I don't know if there might be gotchas lurking in the shadows there. I've also never used, or even heard of, Expense Diary.

Essentially, I hope the command you entered did what it should, and I hope you should be able to buy, install, and use Expense Diary now. However, please understand that I am not promising success. I'm just some random nut on an Internet forum. The best I can tell you is that if something breaks, you get to keep all the pieces.

You might try Expense Assistant. I've never used it, so I can't say how well it works. I just searched maemo.org Downloads for "expense".
