UPDATE: Should have read the thing more closely: this is just a mockup done by the website, not Nokia. Anyway, descriptions of upcoming devices are always intriguing...

Perhaps I'll get flogged for missing some prior posting about this (or about how it's a rumor and should be ignored). But, whatever. FYI:

Nokia Reportedly Considers Making Laptops

Nokia (NOK) CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo today told the Finnish national broadcaster YLE that the company is considering entering the laptop business, according to Reuters.

“We are looking very actively also at this opportunity,” Kallasvuo reportedly said.

I think it's fairly certain that they won't make a normal x86 netbook - so, Maemo on more form-factors? Is that the reason why the "tablet" branding is going to be dropped? Because the Maemo range will not only be tablets anymore? Hmm...

I'd go for a Maemo based convertible-tablet netbook .... say 7" or 9" screen.

Could probably even fit some things that different people yell for (dual full size SDHC card slots, different types of video out, 1.8" or 2.5" drive bay for HDD or SSD, PCI-Express Mini card for _optional_ WWAN, huge (relative to an N810) battery capacity, gobs more memory).

Yup, I'd buy one of those. Hopefully before 2011 though. Like, this year. If I knew it was coming, before the Asus T91's Ubuntu version (or the CTL 2Go tablet Linux version) is on the street, I'd probably wait for that as my spending target.

I can't cite an official Nokia source on this, but yes, they've said there'll be a device sometime this year; plans were 1st half of 2009, to be specific.

Besides, wouldn't it seem kind of silly to release a new OS, which is unsupported on current hardware, and not release new hardware for two years?!

Wow, if Nokia does go into the laptop business, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be getting one of those for review. A Nokia laptop would be such a hot item (at least at first for the pure novelty of it) that I and others would be silly not to review it.

A nokia laptop would be awful.

More rumors on this - http://www.rethink-wireless.com/?article_id=1089 According to this one, it is expected to be a netbook based on memo and incorporating elements from N800.
