@Laughing Man: Just to express my view on SIP on iPod Touch/iPhone, although iPod Touch supports SIP calls I do not think it is the same as SIP found on many Nokia devices like N95/82 etc. I believe SIP on iPod Touch would be through Fring and I personally have had a real bad experience on my N82 using Fring SIP. Lag in call is unbearable. Good call clarity using SIP on N810 (using voipraider) would allow a lot of cost savings. I have unlimited outgoing calling in US for $10 through voipraider. Excellent clarity. Thanks again for your reply!

Thanks for the DVDFab 4.0 tip dantonic! As long as there is a media player like mplayer that plays audio n video smooth my bro should be happy.

This is exaclty what I said to my bro! I have prepared him (mentally) for tinkering and going under the hood right out of the box! . And thanks for the useful apps.

I am still looking for answer to following question:
I want to buy 8 gb miniSD/microSD card with adapter. Kindly advise the company - SanDisk/Kingston? and miniSD/microSD class. I read somewhere that class 6 caused some problems.

I am placing my order right now for N810

From what I've heard N810 gps receiver sucks! so just be warned. My holux connects in seconds. From others' posts I've gathered that the N810 takes several minutes to connect to the satellites, when it does connect.

For video, the other apps like: mplayer and mytube, give perfect quality, no gripes whatsoever. I use DVDFab 4.0 to encode my videos, although I'm sure there might be better programs out there. I encode my dvds with ease.

About the Canola and Youtube - open /home/user/.atabake/config and edit the last row which says something like

to

vo = omapfb
This should get it running as fast as in mYTube, but be prepared for some artifacts when mplayer is is embedded in the Canola window. In fullscreen its okay.

Alternatively you can use the xv:ck-method=auto mentioned in this thread:

P.S. Its better, but Canola is still lagging behind.

I agree. In fact, the stock UI that comes with MPlayer is light and works very well.

I would *like* to like Canola, but it has some things that prevent me from using it.

1) It's heavy and slow to load/react
2) It takes over the entire screen and acts like an OS in itself
3) The inertial scrolling of songs is cool, but sometimes when trying to scroll I accidentally select a song, which can be annoying. It would be better if there were discreet 'play' buttons for each song, making scrolling incident free.
4) Video playing leaves a lot to be desired

I'd caution against buying the N810 at this point. Especially if you're making comparisons against an iPod touch. The UI experience is brutal and slow.

Many of the people here are also offering overly optimistic accounts of the device's capabilities. I just finished selling mine because the N810 struggles a fair bit to accomplish most of what it sets out to do.

I'd hate to see someone go through the regret I did over the purchase. Go with the iPod, as much as I don't like Apple, they will at least acknowledge that they made it after the fact, and support it longer.

Plus there is a multitude of widgets that you can use based on what you need.
On top of the launchers that corrupt listed, I use
omweather - shows weather, if using gps and connected to internet will autoupdate location and weather data.
Homediskfree - shows disk space available
LoadApplet - this applet is great because if something hangs you can just look at the list and kill the process without having to use the terminal

All these things except for easydebian require basically no tinkering, simply install from extras-devel repositories... very easy.

Most SD cards are from Sandisk anyway, they're just rebranded. They all have classes (the highest being 6 which means it's the fastest). For media, class 6 isn't necessary. But if your planning on running the OS off of it you should go for a class 6.

I have a Transcend 8GB class 6 for my external SD card, and have had 0 problems.

You are buying a very portable device that does a multitude of things, Although I would say "Brutal" is a huge exaggeration, you must understand there are some limitations to the capabilities of the device.
Like Omega has experienced, and many others it seems, the built-in GPS of the N810 seems to be sub-par. Also the UI experience, and the touch experience is inferior to the IPod Touch, but I wouldn't say it's so bad to warrant not buying it.

All the programs listed above work very seamlessly. Web browsing can be slow sometimes when visiting a "heavy" site. But that is to be expected.
Every once in a while something can crash, especially if using more than one prog at a time. ( I tend to do this a lot, cause I think my N800 is like a PC ). No big deal just use the loadapplet widget to kill the process.

I was lucky enough to get my N800 as a gift from a friend who converted to an Iphone.
I can only tell you that if for some reason I killed my N800 ie. dropped it in water, destroyed it somehow, lost it etc... I would definitely purchase another.... idk if I could wait until one of the new tablet devices came out.

@Laughing Man, thanks for the reply! So instead of buying microSD 8 GB can I buy a regular 8 gb SD? I guess regular SD cards are cheaper.

@dantonic, thanks for additional apps!. The apps list is now looking impressive.

@Omega, I am not sure if I am kinda anti-apple but I am thinking of alternatives. I know for fact iPod Touch is excellent at what it does. But I am sure there are other alternatives that are worth trying. I'll anyways have 15 days return policy should something go wrong. I read quite a few negative comments before I purchased N82. But I bought it, spend time on it and now I am sooper dooper satisfied with it. Sometimes you just need to give gadgets some time to get the things to work the way you want.
