There's an artikle on the front page saying
Perhaps the most reassuring part of Apple’s approach for the Nokians is Jobs’ determination to have it his way. So, as others have noted, the iPhone isn’t a smart phone, onto which you can plunk your own applications to make the device ever more your own. No, you’ll get only what Steve permits you (which is still more expansive than Sony or Microsoft, come to think of it).
Does anybody know the source for this claim? I didn't find related articles/press releases. However, the ability to install/remove/write own applications is one of the key features I'd expect from such a device, so it would be very important to know this.

The engadget-article doesn't mention any source.

I didn't know people who attended CES already gave this info in a chat. While this is enough for me to believe it , I still would love to find something that comes close to an official, written source. You know, I like to really be able to cite it.

So if you find an interview with iSteve saying "Thou shallst not install your software on holy devices", pls post here

The source is mentioned in the second sentence of the Engadget article, but here's the original blog posting from Michael Gartenberg, analyst for Jupiter Research. He doesn't mention which Apple droid he extracted the information from, or if it was mentioned during the keynote by He-who-can-do-no-wrong.

1st and last paras contain the info you seek.

Yep, this in obvious downside/difference compared to N800. However, as we have seen from the smartphone/symbian market, only a (relatively small?) subset of consumers really wants to install apps. What many consumers care about is easy, intuitive, and solid implementation of the pre-installed apps. Here Apple is giving a real challenge to Nokia et al, and I truly hope they will rise to the occasion. As Nokia Nseries chief just put it, this is not a huge threat to Nokia yet and more an exiting development that should make Nokia also better.
