Bare bones, highest quality multimedia players...

I want top performance but dont want to pay the price..
I probably will only use this thing for MP3, FLAC and video streams
Gimme the goods...

oh yea and i want awesome battery life.

You should try MediaBox. It gives you all you are asking for, and even a bit more.

Bare bones? mplayer

(Note: by bare bones, I mean there is no frontend, not that it's lacking features)

All players use Mplayer or the OSSO-Player. So it is really up to interface, and which one is fastest. Canola and MediaBox are NOT "fast," you need something more simple. I think there is xmms and youamp, or something...

The tablet is not really good for high end FLAC or Video. Its decent, mostly with the right format, but stutters on High Quality video.

nothing worth getting exicited about -wait for the next unit or buy a standalone music player

Yeah, xmms uses neither -- libmpg123 standard, libmad optional, IIRC. And mpd (my favorite) uses libmad. There's probably one or two others using one of those libraries, but I'm not thinking of any more right off.
