Head to http://downloads.cloudmade.com Select where you are and download the Navit bin file. Enjoy.

Will these bin files allow Maemo Mapper to calculate routes offline? Or just navit?

Can maemo mapper read the bin file? I'm a bit confused.

No, just Navit. Navit uses the vector maps, while Maemo Mapper uses raster maps.

Navit works, but is extremely non-user friendly.

Hotz, use the Navit wiki. It really helped me. http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Main_Page

I use emelfm2, then find the file (make sure you can see hidden files), then use the find function to find Openstreet, then enable the mapset, change the path to where my map is, and disable the demo map.

I hope that helped.

thx for the link but i found the wiki today and walked threw....
i installed the emelfm2 - works fine-
but is there an option to search in the editing mode? so that i do not have to scroll down all the way?
how do i enable invisible files, and what for is good for?
I managed to find navit.xml in \usr\share\navit\navit.xml and copied to \home\user\navit.xml
I edited the copied file as dicribed and saved....
--> noo maps shows up! gps is active...
then i tried to edit the \usr\share\navit\navit.xml i know that i do not have to do this but.... anyway permisson was denied, i did the gain root so i have no idea why i dont have permission. i'm also not allowed to create an folder....do i have to run the x terminal with root all the time to be root ..??
thx for answerers!

i tipped navit in x term to start it an got this error message...
vehicle_gpsd:vehicle_gpsd_try_open:Connected to gpsd fd=4 evwatch=0x167ac8
map_binfile:map_binfile_open:Failed to load '/media/mmc2/navit'
map_rect_new_textfile unable to open textfile /home/user/.navit/destination.txt
map_rect_new_textfile unable to open textfile /home/user/.navit/bookmark.txt
navit:main:Using '/home/user/.navit/navit.xml'
maybe anyone knows what i have messed up...

That kinda sucks that Navit is so user unfriendly. I wonder how long it'll be before it's uber user friendly. I for one prefer raster maps over vector since they look nicer, however, vector has so many more advantages over raster that it makes it silly to stay with raster.
