Just a thought, isn’t there a disparity between the efforts going into the release of new handheld hardware and the efforts being put into a common software platform? For which Mer is a prime candidate.

No one doubts the quality of the effort being put into Mer but, with respect, wouldn’t a few more hands be helpful?

A big beneficiary of Mer will be SmartQ but this is a small company and with limited resources. But what of other manufacturers, such as NVIDIA, who do not wish to be corralled into the Intel MID/Atom straightjacket. Would it be in NVIDIA’s interests to contribute some resources to Mer. Not to mention those manufacturers who are remaining true to the Internet Tablet concept – which includes Aigo and Viliv.

Please forgive the presumption, but would there be any benefit in involving such manufactures in the project? Or is the Maemo/Nokia connection a restriction in this regard?

As it appears to me Mer is lagging too far behind and not keeping up with the hardware announcements. I get mixed feelings when I see these hardware intentions. On the one hand I am excited at the possibility of choice and at the same time brought down by the realisation that there is no alternative operating system for them.

Or is it just inevitable that Windows 7 is going to get a stranglehold in the way that Microsoft always has.

Rebski; Mer doesn't have to keep up with the hardware announcements if it continues to get the press and developer support. Much like Linux on a grander scale, Mer seems to be in the mode of becoming an effort where other manufacturers and developers feel comfortable with coming into the project and donating their code/time pretty easily. The Nokia/Intel connection here helps a good bit towards keeping relevancy, and for smaller companies, puts them in a place of using an OS that has some maturity to it in the backend, while being able to add their own to the pot.

I reinstalled .13 last night on the N810 I have and it seems to be running better. However, clicking on yet another menu item (to change the theme) caused Hildon to crash again. I wonder if it would be a good idea to "turn off" those items visually that aren't finished yet, in this way they wouldn't cause the system to come down and therefore add to the list of bugs/issues.

No of course they don’t but what customers for these devices are going to run Mer, then? Apart from the diehards on forums such as this one who will insist on trying it where possible?

Aigo, Viliv and now ITG XP-Phone are all released to run Windows XP. None of them carry the intention to run Mer ‘in due course’. The big MID news a few days ago was an excitable article on how brilliantly Windows 7 runs on the Viliv. Microsoft is delighted and celebrated the fact at Computex.

That is all the clarification I need and explains it all really. So I shall back away and desist from raising the subject again.

Right - we're not at this point stable enough to be shipped along with hardware. We are however making Mer as easy as we can to adopt to new device types. Which means, given a Viiv, let's say, if it follows the simple but picky rules of the vendor social contract, it will be almost trivial to get Mer running on it.

The current ports to devices are based on the thought to engage current device communities in Mer - which bases on top of a very solid touch framework. Which device communities often don't have - excepting Android. Maemo still has a huge amount of goodwill with the open source community - and it's easier to get working properly than let's say, Android.

We are more than open to cooperation with hardware vendors but they need to behave (VSC) and they should contribute like everyone else with coders and help bring us towards a free platform, or liberate/sponsor people that can contribute..

That said, we're not commercially convincing just yet - but we'll get there. We have good momentum.

Did you ever notice Mer has a X86 port? It's trivial to get booting on a Viiv, I bet - if you get GRUB on it. And it'd be fast.

This is probably a stupid question, but I have a spare sd card and I'd like to try mer, but the instructions aren't clear enough for me: I want to install it on my n800 in the external sd slot (or the internal one, I don't care), will the installer take care of partitioning/formatting it or should I do it beforehand (and if so, what's the recommended partition type, ext2, ext3, vfat)?
I'm pretty sure you took care of everything in the installer, but I wouldn't like to start it only to discover that it wipes the wrong sd card or, worse, the existing diablo in the onboard flash.
