Does anyone have info or educated guesses on how many 770s were actually sold to date?

Well, we could look at WLAN MAC address of first units sold in October/November 2005 (i.e. from developer program) an units sold few week ago and try to guess something from that. But this implies numbers are consecutive and there are no holes (not used or used for other devices). First few bytes (4) are identical and mean manufacturer and probably model - maemo download pages check for it when downloading firmware so there must be pattern. The page accepts any code between 0014a7fa1d00 and 0014a7fcXXXX (I.m not sure about last XXXX, was lazy to try). My id is near 0014a7fa21XX and got in in November 2005.

Well, I got mine just 3 weeks 12/06 with the latest OS already install so mine is probably one of the newest ones. My address is 00:16:4e:98:96:81.

Hmm.. so can you some how deduct from that number how many have been made?

This forum has 4301 members, and I would imagine most of them have one. However, on the other hand, it must a (small?) subset of the 770 owners.

Maybe around 50,000 units sold? Or maybe even more. The fact that Nokia decided to expand their N-series with an internet tablet shows that the 770 must have been selling well.
Quite impressive considering the fact that there was almost no public advertising for the 770.

Does anyone who has made popular program, like gnuite, have any kind of statistics how many times each version is downloaded?

As the MAC address posted is completely different it probably makes my idea somehow irrelevant :-) Or it means that the first MAC address space (~190000 units) was exhausted and they started new one.

https://garage.maemo.org/ has some statistics.
However, given that some people have downloaded maemo mapper multiple times, and others didn't download it at all, I don't know how near the number of 21,000 downloads for the most popular maemo software gets to the amount of sold devices.

I suppose that most consumers don't even know they can install 3rd party apps, or don't care.

That could be misleading considering gnuite offers very frequent updates.
