I've done some searching around on google, and on these forums, and haven't found much of an answer.

Do any of you guys have any Woot watching programs? If so, what do you use? What are the differences amongst the ones that might be provided? Etc.

Just wanting something I can check my daily woot and will be nice for wootoffs (I hate the item selling out before I can click "I want one!" when it's a great item during a wootoff and I'm stuck using the browser).

Sorry, I don't think there's a Maemo-specific app that will do that for you. There are a few websites that do Daily Woot, though.

I know there are some websites other than Woot.com which will show the Woot items, but I was wanting more of a standalone program. There are plenty of them for the iphone, windows, and even a few for linux. I just haven't found any for maemo specifically.

What are the chances if I found a nice one it could get ported?

Such as this one: http://www.wootsnoop.com/pages/downloads/linux.htm

On a cursory look, I can't tell if that app is open source (probably not). Nor, can I tell what is was written in (i.e., programming language).

Asking for apps to be developed is fine, but it's not often that someone will do it for you unless you offer some compensation -- or they need it too. You're welcome to ask, though.

It is closed source ("Copyright Curtis Moxley, 2006-2007") and written in Java.

Of course, meaning that this particular app cannot be (easily) ported to Maemo.

That's such a shame. Such an app needs to be written for Maemo!

Options:
  • Find a linux-based app that's written in Python or C (or even QT or Ruby, for that matter). Learn how to port it to Maemo.
  • Learn a programming language and make it yourself.
  • Offer a bounty for someone to make it for you.
  • Etc.
But, to say that this is something that "needs" to be done in Maemo? Well, you're the first person I've ever heard ask for it.

Honestly, being that Internet Tablets are made for the internet, most people probably do just go to one of the websites that already provides this functionality.

I don't mean to stifle your request, but as stated, there are ways to do what you want -- and already via the internet.

Good luck!

Tim

Ok, not to sound abjectly stupid, but Woot does have an RSS feed that updates either daily, or several times a day if there's a wootoff (like today). So you *could* just grab their RSS feed and set your refresh to ever xx number of minutes.
