I was wondering if there would be a new OS out for the N810? I read a little bit about maemo 5 and I found that the N810 can't run it. I did read something about a "Mer", but I have no idea what that is. If someone could help me out and tell me if there's going to be something new, that would be great. Thanks!

Mer is the future of the tablet. It's an OS for the N8x0 tablets that is based on Ubuntu (IIRC) and will be what we run on our tablets to give them a longer life just like Linux does for older PC's.

It's still in development and has a lot of work to be done, but once it's ready for a full release, it'll be great. Til then, you can try out the other alternatives in the Alternatives section to kinda get an idea of what you can do with the tablet currently.

When Mer is ready for release, will is be an installable .deb file found in “extras”?

I would think it would be a flashable OS, but we won't really know until it's done. I'm hoping it's flashable so that you can just go into Mer right off and just have it instead. We'll have to wait and see!

EDIT: They do have a flashable version for testing, but I'm sure they'll have options, such as flashing, installing on top of Maemo, etc.

The current installer installs Mer as a "dual-boot" and is installed via Extras.

Flashable images are on the roadmap as well, but require a bit of infrastructure in place to get Nokia-provided goodies which only they are licenced to distribute.

so is mer going to add any new features or make the N810 any better, or is it just there to make is so that they can still work? Also, is it going to change the format of the N810, because I like it the way it is now. I'm a bit confused about it still. If someone could please tell me more about it, that would be awsome! (or is that all we know about it yet?)

Well, there's another upside to Mer. Even after the last of the earlier NITs dies, it will be transferable up to the newer tablets too.

Mer is being developed by the Maemo community in a fully open way. It's homepage, including screenshots, documentation and plans is:

I'm hoping they have the iPhone like icon scroll similar to what I demonstrated in my UI concept design.
