Now that VLC 1.0 has finally been released, I was looking at the changelog and found this little jewel:
Maemo Port:
* New Maemo port with:
- an interface based on Hildon framework.
- scaler based on the swscale_nokia770 library.
http://www.videolan.org/developers/vlc/NEWS

Does anyone know where to get the .deb for this port or make one?
I would like to try it but I can't find one on the VideoLAN website, and the forum and wiki are disabled due to the high load.

Thanks

VLC is still inferior to mplayer on the tablet, except for one thing: it can stream out video or audio (not both simultaneously).

I have VLC on my applications list. I think it works in Maemo (I never tried installing it -- it takes up about 15.8 MB). Unfortunately,I don't know if it's the latest version, and I don't know the repository (I just "installed" the repositories from http://www.gronmayer.com/it/), but the maintainer is listed as:tapio.hiltunen@vtt.fi. Maybe someone knows the repository?

There are some older packages (0.9.0) here. I think the VLC in the Anemone repository is even older.

EDIT: The "maemo support" was added by a Google Summer of Code student last year.

Interesting, I'll try the 0.9 version, but I suppose the native Hildon interface and new scaler can improve performance and reduce memory footprint. It would be nice to compare both versions.

I think those improvements are in the version I linked. They were added by the SoC student.
