If you have the n800 experimental mplayer installed try adding "-vo xv" That will reduce the VO time significantly.

Where do you find additional software? Only thing I've been able to find is an audio recorder in the "Garage" section at maemo.org. I've tried adding all the software libraries there to the "Application catalogue"" but no installable programs have shown up other than a game and that media streamer (that I don't have any current use for).

Add the OS2007 repositories from http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationRepositories
I've found you need to selectively disable certain repositories to be able to see apps in others...still a mystery to me!
