here you can compare the sizes of the N900, Iphone and Droid:

All things considered, the N900 wins on hardware and software. There's only one reason to get a Droid - on Nov 6, you'll be able to go to a VZW store and get one, whereas between Nokia and T-Mo, they'll still be consulting the astrological signs about when to release it and how to keep their network up.

I'd say they're both good picks and you can't go wrong with either one for hardware and software. Each offers a unique set of features the other won't have. So in the end it's what type of touchscreen you prefer, do you want more screenspace or pocketbility, memory space, and software and uses.

The Droid can't be used as a modem until 2010, and even then it will cost an extra $15/month.

If you go for the Droid, you better be sure you love it.

And just to offset this bit of nastiness on Verizon's part, T-Mobile's network bombed last night/late afternoon. Sigh.

And so be sure not to read about the new Sony Android phone.

As a competitor, I would worry more about the Xperia (and whatever follows it). While the Droid runs at essentially the same speed as the N900 (550 vs. 600MHz), the Xperia has a 1GHz processor. This is life in the hardware lane - no matter how fast you go, the next day's model is faster.

Then again, maybe the delay is so that the N900 can ship with the 1GHz Snapdragon now that Nokia and Qualcomm are playing nice with their patents.

Probably easier to go with the 1GHz OMAP.

But, probably also a dramatic impact on battery life.

I forsee dual-core cortex's being the next big thing in mobile performance. In addition improved DSPs for decoding/encoding HD video and such (although until both transfer speeds, and storage increase dramatically, it's mostly a gimmick).

In other news,

Ah droid, how I was ready to love ye... The camera is the deal killer for me. At the end of the day, I would like to have a nice camera on my device, which is something the droid does not deliver. Thus, the N900 is back at the top of my list!

}:^)~
