I've never used a D-Pad I liked. I wish they would put a track ball (like the Blackberry) or, even better, a trackstick like any number of PCs starting with the old IBM Thinkpads. My UMPC uses a central trackstick (with mouse buttons on the side) and it is a perfect compliment to a thumboard.
I just hope that some device in the future they finally put a reasonably game friendly D Pad on there as surely having that plus everything the iPhone has, would be better. I mean this is the company who invented N-Gage which was great in theory, but it was too bulky and people weren't ready for gaming on their phones yet. Today I would not be surprised to find Nintendo release a DS Phone, people have been expecting the PSP Phone for ages, yet I am stunned none of the phone manufacturers have tried to beat them to it releasing a more game friendly phone.
People do play games on their phones, but I think once its as comfortable to do as it is on the DS and PSP (I say comfortable in a loose term as I have other personal issues with the PSP but related to its analog controller) then things will get interesting.
