Isn't Nokia's "problem" of breaking into the US market and becoming a major player stemming from them not subsidising handsets and making carrier-specific handsets as well as advertising?

They could spend $2 billion on advertising, subsidising handsets and getting american "mindshare".

I really have no clue. 2 billion USD translates to a lot of money to me. Same for 1 billion USD.

In the case of the company I worked for, buying what I called White Elephant companies jacked up the stock price. Then the CEO retired with tens of millions of dollars, leaving stockholders with an empty bag.

Oh man! If I could ever run UptoDate on a Nokia Tablet that would be like floating on a cloud of titties!

I agree. The N900 is a more sophisticated device, with way more potential. But for most mainstream consumers, WebOS is a much more slick, easy to approach, integrated platform, similar to the iPhone. People don't always want the most sophisticated thing. They want the few things that they do, presented to them in a simple, easy to grasp, aesthetically pleasing fashion. And they don't want to be bothered with other choices that they don't care about.

I think a mistake people often make when thinking about what makes a device succeed in the market is that they assume the technically most sophisticated device is the best and therefore should sell the best. But people want things that are straightforward, not too complicated, and unthreatening. In fact, they confuse the eye-candy slickness of something like the iPhone with technical sophistication.

This all story of palm makes no sense. It’s just palm sending the news to the press to try to increase is shares.

It was just a joke for me.
Although it could also be a nice to have feature, that you *can* use your recently bought iTunes music with your Nokia devices without needing to upgrade your whole iTunes libary to "iTunes Plus" or on Mac using iTunes for snycing cause it's much easier to use the Apple Apps in Mac OS instead of third party programs.
