Im trying to use my GPS without a data plan. I downloaded the map program from nokia's website and then i downloaded the american maps onto the device.

yet it still says "downloading" when i use the map program on my phone, which it shouldn't since i put the maps on there????

anyways the next, and main problem is im not sure how to use the GPS without using a phone network.

all i know is when i have the phone map open and i click the top right button it says no position or w/e with a red dot next to it. and if i leave the map open and go to the desktop i can see a little sattilite blinking

Are you trying outside with a clear view of the sky? It might take 5 to 25 minutes. If you get a wifi connection, that can help. It worked for me.

On the n810 you can click on the GPS icon and get to a dialog that tells you the number of satellites in view and the number in use. Another of the backward steps from Maemo 4 to Maemo 5.

So you talk about the N900 here, or what is your hardware?
What is "the map program" and what exact address of "nokia's website"?

well i finally figuered it out, the stock map/gps app on the n900 its glitched, it only runs the GPS device for 30 seconds and then shuts off. I figuered this out because i watched that sattillite blinking for a while/ changing settings to see if i could get it to stay on longer. i turned off power saving mode, turned off network assistance, deleted the server so it was blank, and like i said earlier i attempted to put the maps onto it

anyways, the fix was i downloaded that Ecoach program that tracks exercises, that program keeps the gps active the entire time its open, hence i achieved a lock without a sim card in my phone.

and it achieved a fairly accurate location as well, the last 2 digits of my mailing address are 11, the gps said 50, i guess that kinda sounds like alot but when im looking at the map zoomed in its pegged right where i think my house should be on the map

anyways can someone tell me what my files should look like with a properly downloaded and installed maps? im still not sure i have them installed right because it keeps downloading all the time
